The 5200 lives. Man what a good sounding saw :givebeer:

Pics tomorrow.

Mark, made a few cookies on a 16 in. oak chunk with mine. Plenty of power. Saw just cuts right thru it, though not as fast as a modern saw. You can't seem to bog it at all. Runnning a 24 in. Woodland Pro full skip chisel chain. Does it throw oil too. Had adjuster half open and it was all over the place. Had to shut it down alot to get the right flow. Have an issue with chain continuing to loosen. Took apart adjuster and will try tomorrow. However I have no idea where the S clip goes. Doesn't seem to let cover fit properly if installed over outside guidebar plate. Where is it suppose to go? Is it necessary?

Bob, the S clip is only needed for a bar with a 3/8's slot in it. If you have that bar then the clip goes after the inner bar plate, the slot of the bar fits over it and the the outer bar plate and side cover.

And yes they do oil a ton if you have the oiler opened too far. My 4200 is like that also, only about 1/3 of the way still puts out plenty for the 28" bar on it.

No there not going to be really blazing fast in a 16" piece of wood, but put a 36" bar on it and bury it and it won't be far behind most modern saws of its size and probably ahead of most of its vintage competition.

I'm sticking a 32" on this one tomorrow.

I'm reading your post Mark and scratching my head. SUDDENLY, like a bolt of lightning that knocks me on my a##, I can picture what you're saying. I'll never have to ask that question again cause "I've seen the light". Maybe that's why my chain keeps coming loose, the bar slips.:clap:

Bob

I really enjoy the 5200 as well. I happened to find two of them and one has a full wrap handle on it with a bow. For their time they were good saws. I am still trying to find a piston so I can put my 8500 back together.

Because you don't know what you have to sell. Yes you got part #'s but you dont know what they fit and people looking don't know the part #'s.

I think I visited your site yesterday through a link on this forum. The reason I didn't buy was because I'm not ready for the parts yet. I was checking out old McCulloch, Homelite, and Poulan parts. It's cold here in Indiana and I don't have sufficient heat in my old shop to go out and work on saws yet. Probably in a couple of months I'll spend more time out there and will keep your site in mind. I compare prices also, so if you're priced higher than others it would affect your sales. Also, what Mark said, it is very helpful to let us know what saws your parts fit.

Poulan Saw You want, and don't have.

I got to thinking about that after reading about Mark's, like new, restored 245A. I guess for me, it would be a like new, 8500, or one of the big Dolmar based Poulans. All though I no next to nothing about them personaly.

The 4900 is one ya rarely see also. At 77cc it sounds like a good fit for me. But, I'm guessing they might be the same as 5200/5400, same wieght, just smaller displacment. Not sure.

The 245A at 74cc is another on my wish list, along with a Poulan Pro 655, which also just sold on the bay.

So, I'm gonna say the 8500 is at the top of my list...Just something about that Big Green & Black saw that makes me want to get to the woods!!

Gregg,

NO!! LEAVE NOW!!!
yeah they were a pretty good unit:cheers:

It was given to me. With a case, original 18" bar and 3 safety chains. Doesn't run. Hopefully the P&C are in good shape and hopefully it'll only need some maintenance (carb kit, hoses and so on) to get it running. I don't need it and most of my friends and neighbors have saws, but if their saw dies and need to borrow one...this one will be the one, if I can get it running. I will be getting a 'proper' chain for it and a muffler mod. A 16" bar would probably be better for this 42cc saw...put I want to put the VERY least amount of money into it.

And, I've always wanted to try doing a little grinding on a cylinder...I know it's a clamshell design...but just maybe...

Kevin

Why certainally, no snobs around here.

Sit back and tell us about your muffler mod on it and how it runs now.

Sure !!! all are welcome, But, its just a rumor, unless ya post a pic of it.

Do this:camera: and then this:computer:

Gregg,

Thanks Mark...no saw snobbery for me.

After I get'er running...then a muffler mod. I don't have a welder or anything of that nature, so if the muffler would need to be cut open, I'll just put a hole in the side of it and get one of those Husky deflectors.

Pics...yeah I should know better...tomorrow.

Kevin

Forgot to ask...what other Poulan Pro's share parts with the 260? I'd like to know for when I'm looking for parts.

I hve no personal expieriance with that model, but I would think that being a little newer model, that new parts might be available from Poulan, unlike most of the older models that we play with here.:)
At 42cc, that sounds like it is the better Poulan Pro version of the Wildthing.
Not sure, just a guess.

Kevin

Doesn't really answer your question, but I just recently finished resurecting a Poulan Pro Super 380. A good many parts were still available for that. I'm guessing there about the same age. Check out OrderTree.com, I believe it is.
You can look up the parts lists, and put a part in a order page, and see if it is in stock and price.
