If they're red Craftsman versions of 3400's then they're 3.4's. Red 3.7's are usually 3700's, but a few late ones were 3800's. Grey 3.7's are all 3800s. I'd like to find a nice 3.7 labeled 3700......

I just checked. The red Craftsman says 3.7 18 and the gray one doesn't say anything but they have the same Craftsman model number 358.356091. I'm writing this number by memory, should have written it down instead. The gray one always seemed peppier than the red one, maybe it's because the red one is smaller.

Only question is "Didn't Joe state that the saw was newer than 2006?

Thats what I thought too. About the only "Pro type" saw they have made since then, was the 330. Seems like that batch that hit the shelves of TSC a while back, were made in 2007. Guess will just have to be patient and find out. :D

Poulan 202

Picked this up today to use for parts for my 306A.

The 306 may have to wait a bit longer.

I've got a line on an older local Red Craftsman 3.7/Poulan 3700. Guy says it runs great and wants $50. I'll talk him down a bit if I go for it.

I might be getting my Poulan series saws mixed up cause its been a while since I looked, but I think its the 4200 and 5200 that had the governed carbs depending on which Tillotson carb it came with.

Pretty sure the 4200 didn't come with the governor in the ORIGINAL carb.
After this long there is a very good chance that it won't have the original carb.
Also pretty sure the 245 and 306 did have the governor.

You're probably right Mike. Like I said I was going from memory and likely got my 306a/245 and 4200/5200 mixed up.
Lets call it a senior moment.

And from the way I've seen things from Poulan it might well be possible that they ran out of 4200 carbs and stuck 5200 carbs on the 4200s to finish a production run.
Things like that are pretty common with the beloved lime green saws and especially the rebadges.

You're right on the money Mike. There were a few late 306A's with ungoverned carbs however. Another member here posted some questions here about his ungoverned 306A carb a few weeks ago. A couple weeks ago I got a late production 306A with the ungoverned HS too. That's my saw with the "Temperature limiting Ca spec muffler" that I've recently posted pics of.

That's me :msp_thumbup:.My 306A is with the ungoverned carb and a tin muffler.

Yep, And then there are the knuckleheads like me, who go the lazy mans way to disable the gov. We replace the carb on a 5200, with one from a 4200. :msp_sneaky:

That's what I was thinking. I have a 306A right now that I think is in need of modifying. I just use the round piece out of the Walbro kits to block them off.

Does your tin muffler have five cover screws and forward outlet holes like mine?

No,my muffler had(i say "had" because was completely broken and i had to replace it with a cast one which Mark(Modifiedmark) sent to me) one central bolt on the cover.

What have I got

Just picked this up for $20 today. Fired cold on third pull on choke, started on next pull with choke off, idled great, revved well and held consistent RPM at idle and WOT, no dead zone on acceleration. Chain stopped immediately when dropping to idle, so clutch is in great shape. Manual oiler fully functional. Even some life left in the chain.

I guess I thought when I heard about it that, as a 3.7 hp it'd be a Poulan 3700, but is it older than that series? Doesn't look quite right to me for a 3700. Sure has been well cared for.
