I like the private lable Poulans. I've got red Craftsman 1.9 (Poulan XX-D) and 2.1A (25DA) saws, as well as the Dayton badged orange 245SA (always forget what the Dayton model # is). On the green side, I have my 306A and two S25-CVA's (plus a parts S25-CVA). The green is growing on me. I used to not be a fan of it, but I like the looks of that green 306A quite a bit.

2Z463A...I had trouble remembering that one too. After having it a few years like I have it gets easier. I'm getting a good bunch of 306A Poulans lately. I don't remember them selling any of them new around here but they must have.

Yep that's it. Not sure if mine originally was a PowerSharp version because the original clutch cover was gone when Joe sent me the saw. He sent a good 245A cover with it, and I lucked out on a non-PS Dayton 245/306 clutch cover (with spike set) on feebay for a decent price shortly afterwards. It does have the combination compression release/throttle lock thumb button like a 245SA. IIRC some of the Daytons were sold without PS (but with the 245SA's decomp setup) and those had a slightly different Dayton model number (something like 4Z462, or 4Z463 with no 'A'). The Dayton model numbers have no rhyme or reason to them (that I can figure out anyways). Of course I'll write the model number down when I go out to the shop today to work on saws.

Not much reason for a compression release on my Dayton, I think it has less than 90psi. I don't quite understand, it did so well the last time I ran it.....Wait a minute! I think mine does have a compression release, just thought of it, maybe that's what's wrong with the compression, I'll go out and check, the release might be stuck..

Wild Thing Oiler

I found a wild thing at a yard sale today, but the gears in the oiler are stripped. Do I need to do anything special when installing a new oiler? I tried messing with the old one, but it's done. It starts and runs like a champ though.

Anyway, I tried the rope trick, and it worked pretty well. A small pair of vice grips worked pretty well to get the clutch off. First time pulling a clutch, so hey, I learned something.

Anyone have the part number handy?

Thanks

Hopefully after I replace the fuel line and get the air filter and cover from the owner, I can get it up and running.

Could anyone tell me what bars would fit on this? Never had one with only one stud before:msp_confused:

I believe it is a oregon 91 mount like the double guard... that looks like a nice saw, great find

Nice score. Also dig the Homelite Super E-Z saws in the background. The bar mount for that Craftsman/Poulan Micro series saw is the extremely common Oregon A041. Same mount as the Poulan XXV series saws.

Looks like the same thing as a Poulan 2000. So anything that fits the poulan should fit yours.

NOthing special needed. Simply put outlet line on nipple on crankcase then slip oiler over crankshaft, then screw it down.
Part # is 530071259 and they are used on a lot of differant model saws and should be readily available.

So far, all it needed was a new section of line from the tank to the handle. The rest will get replaced anyway since its about the same age but all the shops are closed due to the holiday weekend. Now I just need the air filter, air filter cover, bar, chain, bar nut....:hmm3grin2orange:

Hi, I recently purchased this professional chainsaw to start a logging
buisness and hoped to get my company on the Axmen TV show.

Now I can not get the saw started. What should I do? :help:

That's a really nice looking WT!
Do the fuel lines and filter, clean and kit the carb and saw lots of stuff down!!!

Mike

I have nothing against that saw series............other than the tooless clutch covers on some of them and the terrible color scheme. If a fellow was color blind it wouldn't matter I guess...:D

Funny how a saw can find its way back home. The first was with my Dads S25DA. This was about 7 years ago, didnt know about the site, or even how to tune a carb!, Well, my dad was cutting some Oak, and it died, refused to start. We brought it up to my local shop and he toldus it wasnt worth fixing:bang:. I left the saw with him for some dumb reason and he sold me my only new saw, my Dolmar PS 540. FAst forward a year or 2 I find this site, want to get some saws, call him he has 6 and one is my Dads S25DA which was in great shape. The rest is history, put a new barb kit and fuel line and now he regrets buying that MS170!
Three years ago I sold a 3700/4000 to a teacher at my old high school. It was a mistake, too much saw for him and he was always calling me with a "problem". First he said it would start, well he wasnt choking it, then it wouldnt run good, he left the choke on. Finally the chain would loosen, he broke the adjuster screw by not lining the bar up then clamping it down! That was it for me, called him and said I have a nice, simple Husky 240, give me my Poulan back plus $40.
There is nothing wrong with that saw, other than the 16" bar is a bit short for it. Not sure what Im gonna do with it yet, I have a nice 3700 and 3.7. Gonna re-paint for sure. I say its a 3700/4000 cause I still dont know, and it has a 4000 style starter.
Right when I finished it. he beat it up a bit, not as pretty now as in this picture.

I like that Peter built in your avatar. Maybe for a MM we can work something out. I need a good truck for hauling my 10" lumber so as to have enough fire wood for next winter.

The Wild thing looks brand new by the way.

I think this is more likely to make someone's day here, than in the eBay/craigslist thread. Hope you folks don't mind.

That's in very nice shape.

I picked up one over the weekend to play with. The price was right, but it does need an oil pump.

I know they are a cheap saw, but it didn't seem that bad. Why do people bash these things so hard? Are they really junk, or do people like to rag on them because they are a cheap homeowners saw?
