new 4200, First saw Ive owned in this series, IM IN LOVE! only problem is the bottom of the case where the 2 handle bolts go in are stripped and cracked. its appears to have had a tree fall on it at one point, hopefully jb weld can fix that problem but other then that it starts quick and cuts great. Im happy:rock:

I might know where a guy with a real slick Mopar might be able to find one of those rear handles!!!

Mike

Thanks, Yes I have a soft spot for mopars, you cant not like them, they made the lime green that is closest to poulan green, they run champion spark plugs just like poulan, and they have the best body lines, just like poulan. The car is a 1972 plymouth duster, I also have a 1965 dodge dart, a 2000 dodge dakota r/t, and I even have a 1972 chrysler conqueror boat with a chrysler outboard, anyway back to the saws, that is a 655BP in the back ground, unfortunately it doesnt get run much because of the evil "inspection cover" between the oil and fuel tanks, and there is a 3700 and 306sa and a nos 330(never run) and a few others in the background. Hopefully more to come soon, there is a kid i went to school with that lives 5 miles from me and I just found out his father was a poulan dealer back in the day, He told me he had a "5300" and a few other big old poulans hes not using that are collecting dust in his attic! cant wait to go there!

Hemiyota, nice score on the 5200 bowsaw!

3400

I leak tested the 3400 and it was blowing bubbles out both crank seals so bad what little hair I had was blowing in the wind.
I'm going to split the case and replace the bearings and seals and the the thrust washers as well if the rod bearing is OK.
I couldn't see any other leaks but I will retest once the seals are replaced.

I need a cutting fix so bad I'm thinking of pulling a George Washington on the cherry tree in the back yard.

Are 3400 cases magnesium? If so I can send him a half or two halves.
Bob

Well I did some practicing and here are some before and after pictures of my J-Red 670 clutch cover. I am ready for ya Bob so send that clutch cover.
There is alittle pitting but because of the oil that is impregnated into the magnesium and it makes very hard to prevent.

Nice find on the 5200 bowsaw! I wonder why they got the top bow guard mounted below?
I checked my IPL for an 8500, and it has a top AND bottom chain guard....same part, so I guess this is missing one

That thing will clean up nice, I'm sure of that. Do it a favor though and pull it down for a good cleanup and inspection BEFORE trying to start it. It at least needs a carb kit, plug, fuel lines and filter.
In the process, now
I have the fitting if you want to covert it to a 2 piece fuel line.
Already replaced the line but thanks. May take you up on that on another saw, though

I'll be posting some more pics, soon....

The good almost new thrust washers on my spare crank are .101" thick the ones on the old and significantly tired crank are .0995" thick. I would not even bother with new thrust washers on my old crank. I'll be adjusting the bearing position to suit the end float. I will put about .003-.005" not having heard anything like a factory spec...

New seals CR 6120 $5.90ea +s/h At Motion brg....I saw prices from 2.90 ($50 minimum) up to $16.95ea...:mad2:.......bearing BH108 1/2L bearing $5.40 ea +s/h at Baum Hydraulic.
now I have to put the 3800 back together after I finish this 850 norton commando engine. :msp_thumbsup:

Thanks for the info on the thrust washers. That’s good to know. I will check for the bearings and seals locally as we have quite a few bearing / seal only suppliers close by.

I haven't seen a commando around for a lot of years. Is it and "S" model? I always thought one would have been great with the little Paxton supercharger kits you could buy back in the late 60's.

Tim. Hope the rod bearings are okay as the crank and rod do not seperate. If the rod is too sloppy ley me know as I may have an extra crank assembly.

Amazed at the Poulan following

Do you think NiK saw this coming! Other than the info Stickies(Craigslist, Manual request and Swap meet) the Poulan Thread is the most visited Stickie. Congrats to all the guys who frequent this site and offer advice, commentary and help with parts. Fantastic bunch of guys.

No Bob, as a matter of fact Nik and I were just talking about that very thing a few days ago and he is astounded how this thread has taken on a life of its own.
Did you realize that with the exception of the Mac thread, we have more posts than all the other brand specific threads combined?

That says something to me about Poulan Guys!

The other thing that astonishes me is the way we are spread out across the country and even the world.
I can fully understand the Poulan popularity in the southeast, as they were the No.1 selling saw here several years.
They were VERY popular with the pulpwood cutters and the loggers of the south and almost every farm had a couple in the shed, but there are guys here from north, midwest east coast and even the west coast and Australia.
Not bad for a little saw company from Shreveport, Louisiana.
Another thing that I see is how the popularity of the Poulan saws is spreading.
I wish I had a dollar for every time one of the members here has said "I'd like to have a Poulan________" or "I've been looking for a Poulan _____".

Mark, Gregg and I have talked several times about how, when we started here, people didn't admit that they had a Poulan in their shed and now it seems like every member here has at least one.
Of course we have also talked about how we USED to be able to pick up NICE 3400s, 3700s, 306s and 245s for $5.00 each all day long and those days (with a few exceptions) are gone too. :msp_sad:

I agree Bob. I bet its got the least amount of name calling too!:) LOL Thanks to Nik starting this thread, I have got to meet many of these "Poulan nuts". Nicer bunch of guys won't be found, I don't believe.

Mike

The running 306s are up to around $85...still cheap in my book.

I had originally just asked him about one. But he said, "Sure you don't want both of them? They're kinda like a family.....been together for a long time" So I figured he wanted to get rid of both. Besides, two is better than one, right?

Got down to the fella with the 8500s. He had the 2 8500s, 1 5200 and 3 boxes of parts...some new. Got the whole package for $200. In the parts boxes were 18 new drive sprockets, some new starter spring discs, and some new bar plates. Whole bunch of gas tank assemblies, starter housings, bar clamps, cylinders, and cases. I think there are enough parts to almost build another 8500 (need a piston and pin), and a 5200 (need a piston and pin).
The one 8500, I pulled apart, replaced the fuel lines and repaired the ignition switch wire, and it fired up. The second 8500 had a small gouge in the piston, so I pulled the p/c. Someone had swapped out the p/c at one time because this one was a smaller bore. I had another p/c in the parts batch, but no wrist pin.
Haven't got to the 5200 yet..........
