take clutch cover off.
put bar on, adjusted to mid- to in- position (your call)
take starter rope (or something else) and place around the sprocket/bar. mark the distance
measure the distance
divide the distance by the length of the drive link.
round up (or down - your choice) to get links needed.

Great, thanks!!

Found a 36" bar, on the Oregon, Craigslist. Was listed as fitting large Husqvarnas. Was asking $35, so I took a chance that it might work on either my 5200 or 8500. It came in and it's a Jonesereds bar. The bar mount looked a little different, and I thought "I wonder if?" And sure enough, it did!!!!!

Worked perfect on my 71A. I didn't think I'd ever find a long bar to fit this. Was even .404 pitch. Not bad for a total of $45.........Now I need to know what the best way is to figure how many drive links I'll need.

That looks good but did you check the oiler hole to make sure it will reach the oiler slot on the 71-A? I know the tail on the Husky bars are a little smaller then the original Poulan mount for those sandcast saws. The 10MM slot Jonsered bars might have just a hair bigger tail on them but it has been some time since I had one in my hands.

That bar is probably a 106DL bar for the Jonsered and I'm betting that might be right on the 71-A as well and if not, should be within a link either way. I know the 31" Poulan bar on my 71-A uses 93DL of .404

I know I have been kinda in and out of this thread latley, been very busy around here, too busy to even mess with saws lately.

I have to say though Wooo Hooo I won a saw on ebay today and its green!

Maybe you can slow down enough to call your Brother once in a while!!!:msp_tongue:
I'll give you a holler tonight when I get back from the beer store!
Gotta go get a couple more kegs of that "rancid goat pee" for my kegerator!
I really got low when I was off for those 10 weeks.

Congrats on the saw...what is it, besides green?

A Poulan...

Yeah I know, a smart ass answer... but you did ask... :D

So Chris have you been in the beg for manuals thread. Email addresses are plastered in every post, and that is still a public forum. I even have my own email address in there. Just saying.

I sent him some manuals by the way, anybody else.

Yes, I've seen people post their EMAs in open forums here. I meant no offense, it's just that I've read/been told that some spam software scans forums for EMAs to use.

I have very few Poulan SMs downloaded, but I do have many Craftsman OMs that include the IPL downloaded that I'm more than willing to share. I also used to be very active in the Beg For Manuals, but eventually got burned-out.

Since we're discussing Poulan docs, here's two links to quite a few IPLs:

I took your advice and had removed it. Just wanted to give an opposing point of view first. I did not think it was big deal.

I let the recoil spring out of the box. dang it.

I was working on replacing the rope on the recoil of my 260 and I got reckless and out came the recoil spring. I tried to put that thing back in by hand but forget that there was no way. So I have been restoring and repairing antique pocket watches for the last 30 years and took a principle from the main spring in a watch and made a spring winder. Here is the pic. It worked great by the way.

Ya ever heard of a Spiegel chainsaw?

I think I saw one on ebay...is that the one you got? Friend of mine has a 3.4 Poulan made Skil Saw. I don't know if it's rare or not but he's considering selling it to me.

I finally got the ignition fixed on the Echo John Deere 80VL. Seems to run pretty good but I'm sure with a little tuning it could run even better. Kinda heavy though compared to other saws in that category.

Joe, you've been reading too many of Saw Troll's posts ... :msp_wink:

I know you won't believe this Ted but those are my own words. Saw Troll may have said the same thing though, and people seem to respect his opinions so maybe I'm getting better at this. BTW have you ever lifted one of those big Echo saws? They seem to me to be a bit heavier than some of the other metal saws that I have and much heavier than the plastic/metal ones. I seem to notice it the more out of shape I get...

Are the clutch drum bearings, for the 71A, still available? Do you happen to know the part number? I can't find an IPL for it......

The 71-A didnt have a bearing orginally it used a brass bushing. That said, I think the rim drive I put on mine did come with a bearing. The bushing part # is 32017.

PM me a email address if you want the IPL for it.

While not maybe seen everyday the Skil 3400s are not uncommon.

No hes right on, I got the Echo version and its a heavy SOB for 78cc.

I hear you on the age thing .....

I don't think it's just the large Echo saws .... I have a few here and all the all-metal ones seem heavier than their counterparts from other brands.

When I get my Mac 440 running, I'll use that one first on cutting days. Then when I switch to anything else, it'll feel like a light saber!

There was a really clean looking Skil branded 3400 on my local CL a few months ago. The guy wanted something like $150 for it and he was a couple hours away from me so I never even called him. It was never relisted, so either somebody bought it or the seller gave up...
