Fellow Poulan fans,

I vac and pressure tested the saw and it was perfect. Put a carb kit in it, new fuel line, sharpened the chain and dressed the 20" bar.
It fired right up 4th pull.

Oils like a bear which I guess it should with a 20"bar.

Since I have never run a (medium large??) 85cc saw before and all I can say is holy F%#XX@#$!!!

This thing is unbelievable.
Unfortunately all I have to try it in is a piece of 10" Norway maple. (Sucks living in the city).

I think I'll build a box for it and take it next time I'm out ATV'ing and try it in some big deadfall wood.

By the way, whoever said that 5200's are up there with the best sounding saws has my thumbs up. It sounds mean at idle and fantastic in the cut. Scared the heck out of the wife.

Do you guys run the rakers at 0.025 or 0.030?
It has a semi chisel chain on it. Im not sure what type but "SDK" (Shindaiwa?) is stamped on the links.

Glad its working out for you. It takes a good 85cc saw to stay ahead of one of those.

Why can't I find one of these! :msp_angry:

There around, keep looking. Guess you dont want to know that I got 5200 from WA state a while back....

This will surprise you..I'm not looking for any more saws, got too many right now. Oh I did manage to buy a nice one yesterday while I wasn't looking. It was a brand X saw, kind of orange and white looking, poulan guys wouldn't be interested.

Nope not interested in Orange and White at all. :msp_biggrin:

Wow! You'll be only about 35 miles from my mansion. (You don't have to believe the last part.)

I guess about 100 miles from me. LOL

There's no saws in Terre Haute .... in fact, there's not much of anything. :msp_unsure:

Silly nut job, the Terre Haute Action track is there. One of the best sprint car tracks around....

Don't know if anyone would be interested......but, I saw this listing when I found the one for my 8500.

Poulan 5200 Power Saw

There it is for those looking! As for the price??? At least it looks like a nice/good one. If he wont ship, I think there are a few members from here in that neck of the woods. Worth a shot.

A fun CAD desert packrat adventure!! Update #1

After reading Fossil's update on his 5200 I decided to get motivated and post up about my 5200's status. I wish I was as far along as Fossil is......... but it's a work in progress!!

This thread details the acquiring of my 5200;

Soo now I'm finally taking some time to finding out just what condition this saw is in. I pulled the muffler as it needs cleaned up and the round exhaust exit pipe is slightly dinged so I want to straighten that. Nothing a correctly sized tapered round socket and a hammer won't fix!! Soo when I am starting the removal of the muffler I compare it to my 4400 and it appears that the 5200 has a "bumper" bolted on to the front of the muffler compared to the 4400. That "bumper" appears to be a cast piece, not just thin sheet metal.........anyone know what the purpose of this "bumper" is and why the 5200 has it and the 4400 doesn't!??? Here are some comparison pictures;

Sooo I removed the baffle setup and am guessing that the wire around the screen is not factory!! Sooo do you Poulan 5200 owners leave the screen on, do you drill or cut out some of the small holes or any other kind of muffler modification???

I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was no ridiculous exhaust residue build up in the exhaust port and the piston/cylinder looked real decent.

I'm getting ready to replace the fuel lines and rebuild the carb........I've got some cleaning ahead of me.

That "bumper" is a optional heat shield. Could have been had on about any of those saws.

I have not bothered with any muffler mods on these at all. Not really needed IMHO, but I rarely put the screens back on the diffuser.

Yep you got some cleaning to do, no doubt.

I do suggest you disable the governor on that carb when you rebuild it, the 5200 had one but the 4200 did not.

Thanks, Mark, for the info about the optional heat shield. I'm thinking this saw had another one of the Poulan factory "options" in that it has a 'West Coast' style full wrap bar on it. Unfortunately it's got a pretty good tweak in it's previous life that I hope can be straightened out!?????

What has been proven to be one of the more durable products to re-coat the muffler with?? I would like to send a number of my mufflers off to be Jet-Hot coated.........of course that is kinda over kill....anyone done that before!?? Hopefully some of the restorers here will have a recommendation on what's worked well for them !???

when i paint mufflers i give it a session with the wire wheel and then put 3-4 coats of high temp engine paint-inside and out. seems to last a good while. can go either glossy, flat, or can even get fancy.

Glad you got it going! Pics or it didnt happen though.

sorry for the delay. had forgotten my camera. anyways, here is the 306A cleaned up. you can see its in great shape except for the clutch cover; that needs a "peg leg" to help it sit correctly OR a new clutch cover since its also got a crack in the upper dawg mounting hole.
also went ahead and showed my new 2000.
got both these saws for $5. needed some parts for both. got some from AS members for the 306A and pulled some from a donor saw and from the spare b&c's for the 2000. after a little carb tweaking both run like scalded dogs.

Jerry, how long do you let the coats dry? Any particular brand that you prefer?

The humidity in Houston really tests my patience when it comes waiting for paint to dry. I've also read that high-temp paint for BBQ smokers works, and doesn't work  :dizzy:.

I'm trying to add a 3700 to my collection, the saw supposedly runs fine, was ran dry & stored for the last six months. The seller is more interested in trades, & won't name a price. I don't want to insult him with a lowball offer, but I also don't to pay feePay prices.

i usually paint it and set in the sun (hot, summer sun) for about a half hour. flip the pieces over and do the same thing. gives each coat about an hour to dry. do 2-3-4 coats (depending on my mood and how late i got started). have even put em back on the saw and let the saw heat cure them.
i just get the rattle can paint at a big box store for $4-$5 bucks. high temp is the key. one can will last a good while.

Poulan 306A done

After almost a year of searching,i am finally able to say that i've done with the 306A.I've painted it,i replaced the rod, bearings,p&c,seals, lines, carb kit and a couple of covers.I need the decals and to paint the air filter cover and the tank cover(i believe that i will do it this week).I want to say a great thanks to Mark(Modifiedmark) and to Gregg(OhioGregg) for the parts they sent to me for free.Without their help,i think that i'll never was able to finish my saw.Pics are follow and i promise for a video in the next few days.

I have a couple of problems even if i've changed almost everything.
1)I can't start the saw without throttle. It behaves like it has low idle but if i set the idle a little higher to start without throttle, the chain is spinning.I've maybe set it too rich,i will test it on the woods tomorrow to see how it goes.
2)I've tested it for leaks and no leak but when i have the saw to idle and turn it to a side,it revs up.It seems like air leak but the seals are fine.Is it possible to leak from the seal of the reeds? This seal is a little hard.

I'm sure this has been beat to death but what is a reasonable price for a new 5200 air filter if I'm able to locate one?

The only one I located (NOS) was priced at $40, so I have no comparison.

If you poke around here, you'll find a thread with some ideas to address the issue.
