Yes that is it. I bought that on ebay and it had a hole punched in it from the chain tensioner. I split the case and welded it up. The saw did not appear to have seen alot of use before it was damanged, and it runs very well. It is all stock for now except I left the base gasket out before assembly.

Very cool!! Sooo was there any notable change in performance with leaving the base gasket out!?? I've got one of those that I need to get up and running.......currently some muffler modifying is on the agenda.

Didn't Dayton brand other Poulan models besides the 5200?? :msp_confused:

Yep. They sold rebadged Micros, XXV's, 361/400/451's, 3400/3700/4000's, 4200/5200's, 306A's, and 245SA's. I have an orange Dayton branded 245SA that would like to share shelf space with your 4Z252...:D

I did not get a chance to run it before I removed the base gasket because of the hole in it.

Get yours running and post some pictures I think you will be very happy with it.

When I rebuilt a PP365 I left the base gasket out. Suppose to see a little more low end torque in the cut but I didnt see any real changes in this saw. :eek2:

While I am not a Poulan afficianado, I do have a PP405 that currently has only 75 lbs compression. It is in the same range (cc-wise) as the 8500, but is from a later era.

I guess the above-quoted response got lost in the tidal wave of spambot posts.

Been piddling on an 83 poulan. Saw isnt in bad shape. It was froze up pretty tight but i got the pistom unstuck, and 2 out of 3 rings salvaged. She seems to have good compression with just 2 rings. Will it be safe to run it with the middle ring missing?

Nuttin' bigger?? U shore!?? :jester:

Biggest Dayton badged Poulans were the 85cc 4Z252 (which is a Poulan 5200). Dayton sold some rebadged Wright saws (in the early 1960's, before Wrights became rebadged Poulans) that were larger than that..............but your question that I answered earlier was regarding rebadged Poulans....

The 5200/5400/8500 poulans all have the same displacement (5.2ci/85cc). The only larger "Poulans" sold during that time were the green Poulan rebadged 100cc Dolmars (Poulan 6000 and S-6000). Dayton never rebadged (I guess that'd be re-rebadged......LOL) those "Poulmars". What Poulan (in Dayton clothing) do you believe you have?

Rims vs Spurs

Let me know your experiences.

The spur sprocket on my 5200 is somewhat beat and I would like to replace it with a rim sprocket. Since the spurs are still made they are easy to find and I can pick one up near me for $20. Most if not all of the Poulenc NOS rim sprockets I've found are in the US and the sellers will not ship to Canada. I have located an Oregon 23706X which will end up costing me $37 to my door.

I would rather have the rim sprocket and all my saws except the little Echo have them.

What's your experience with the life of spur sprockets like?

Also I noticed in the 5200 that all parts between the two types are the same (different stack order) except for the addition of a spacer for the rim sprocket.
Would any of you be able to give me the dimensions of that spacer if I buy the rim?

Ref # Part Number Qty Description
67 530022029 1 Spacer - Inner Race (optional for rim sprocket)

Thanks for any input as always.

Tim

My latest CAD endeavor that Eccentric I.D.'ed in no time flat!!

That sure looks like a Dayton branded Poulan 5200.

I was attempting to get some more run/guessing out of that original I.D. post but you just nailed it right out of the chute!! How many years have you been involved in the CAD/AS world!??

The chainsaw knowledge you(and many others here) have and graciously share is greatly appreciated. I have just over 15 months here at AS and it's been an amazing learning curve. Sure a great group of knowledgeable and fun people I've gotten to know since I signed up on AS........now if my local/in-state AS buddy would just respond back to the PM I've sent him.

I'd never seen a 'Dayton' branded saw in person, just pictures here on AS. The party selling it didn't know what 'Dayton' re-badged saw this was and said they hadn't been able to find anything out about it on the internet. Obviously they didn't look that hard.......and I'm happy they didn't!!

I am amazed at how clean this saw is.....minus the finish condition with the chipped/non-adhering paint. Then again I've not ever owned a brand new, never been fired saw.

There will soon be a change happening in the incoming fuel line area. Whatcha think Mike, one layer or two in the air filtration situation!?? My air filter manufacturer buddy did get me some media and provided some great ideas.....just no time to brainstorm and play with the media/ideas..........yet!!

This muffler exit tube won't need any straightening like the other 5200 I've been tinkering on. Yeah, the finish on this saw isn't perfect..........but the exhaust sound(especially at idle!!) coming out of this muffler sure IS!! Audio on a movie clip does no justice to hearing what they sound like in person!!

I'm pretty dang happy to have found this saw in the condition it's in!!!

just picked up a Skil 1636 (rebadged S25CVA) at the salvage yard. only thing obviously missing is the fuel cap. all kinds of crap in the fuel tank, muffler very rusty but sound, p&c nice and shiny, compression feels good. don't know about spark yet since i didn't carry my scrench in with me but will know soon. anyone know if the original was two-tone? this one has yellowish clutch and starter covers and orangeish everything else. i'm guessing its a frankensaw since the cover says its vibration isolated but the top handle isn't.
i just need to quit going there so i can quit getting saws for ridiculous prices.
hmm. anyone got any idea where the on/off switch would be on this?

That filter is actually in great shape Myron!
I don't know that I would do anything to it.
If you just HAVE to do something to make yourself feel better, throw it down in the toe of one of the missus knee highs, wrap a twist tie around it and snip off the excess.
That was a great find there and I'm a bit jealous!!!
Congratulations..........................YOU SUK!!

Thanks, Mike, that is my first "You found a nice saw/AS congratulations" I've received since I've been here. I'm thinking about mounting some of the filtering media on this filter as a "pre-filter".......similar idea to the knee high stocking idea. I'll document what I end up with.

Sorry to ruin your fun Myron. That was an easy one for most Poulan nuts. It also helps that there was a Dayton 4Z252 on feebay a week or two ago. We talked about it here, and LeeHa ended up with it. There was also "dayton4z252" in the code for your pics. It shows up when a fellow quotes your posts with the pics in them...:D

I've been messing with old saws off and on since the mid-1980's, but CAD has only really had a grip on me since 2005 or so...

Jerry it looks like you scored a Skil branded S25-CVA that got repaired with a handle, fuel tank, and AF cover from a Dayton or maybe Wizard branded 25DA or S25DA. A hybrid Poulan. There are more than a few of those owned by guys here...:D
