Do you remember what the compression was before?
130-140 is REAL good on a 3700.
As long as you have it torn down, if you can locate a set at a decent price, go ahead and stick a set in there.
But as far as NEEDING them ... I wouldn't think so.

Mike

Agree. If your at 130-140 no rings needed. If you can't find any you may try switching rings from top to bottom. Helps a little.

The dealer is a super nice guy, but he just doesn't even try on older saws. Hes a saw salesman... But, I get a lot of nice stuff out of his barn,

I want to big bore a 3400 I have. A 4000 cylinder would be fine too;) I have never seen a 3700 in person.... Local poulan dealer (now the Stihl dealer) sold a ton of 3400s. I did get one 4000 from him, but sold it to nick. It was very clean too. He has 2 306s but I haven't grabbed them. They are fairly rough. I got the scored 3.3 sears best from him for 5 bucks. Gotta love Stihl dealers...lol

Good luck finding a 4000 P&C. A 3700 P&C would do as well seeing as how there is only 3 cc diff between the two. You could also use a 3800 P&C.

I wasn't expecting anyone in this thread to offer up a 4000 cylinder..:msp_biggrin: I though maybe with the 3700. I have 4 3400s and a 3800 cman saw so If I do it, I want to at least go chrome bore. No biggy.

I have had good luck buying saws lately. I bought 2 xxvs for my cousin for the bars and chains and one is a near new looking runner with only fresh gas. Makes you wonder. :dizzy: no one wants to do anything anymore. Gas and go or throw.

Does anyone know of a good thread on how tos for porting an open port cylinder for 3400-4000s?

Don't know of a thread but I know two guys that have really been working on getting the gains out of them!
The intake manifold and carb are the bottlenecks on this series.
I'm wanting to see how hard it would be to make an intake and still be able to fit the filter and cover on.

I thought I read somewhere that you built up a 3400.

No luck....

Apparently pistons for a Poulan 8500 are not available anywhere?

I can get a cylinder, rings, etc....just can't find a piston.

I would like to convert my 4900 (77cc) to an 85cc. Not really sure why, my 4900 runs like a banshee and the extra 8cc might not really be that noticeable. Just a project I guess.

Do yourself a favor and forget it!!!
ModifiedMarks 4900 will SPANK my 5200.
I've run them side by side on a couple of different occasions and there is NO noticeable difference.

Now if somebody fabricated a new intake manifold for these 3400-4000 saws to take a Walbro SDC, I'm guessing there'd be sizeable gains on ported saws.:cool2:

Crap.

I just agreed to sell an sdc carb.... Stink. I'm on this... I wonder about a nice p42 carb or such...

POULAN NLA/NOS parts

I dropped by today and picked up a pair of chain plates for the 5200 (he only had the pair) and I did get 3 air filters for the 5200.
I really only need 1 as I will not be running the 5200 much and I do have the old cartridge which I will fix up.

The first two that asked for a filter were rms61moparman and Warped5 so PM your addresses and I will get them to you. I paid $10 each for them and will check shipping costs tomorrow and let you know what it will be.
He was very busy so he couldn't check stock while I was there but he does have a bunch of air filters and other parts as well as pistons and cylinders.
I am putting together a list that he can check out from the part numbers you guys have supplied.

Eccentric, he does have a number of vibration isolators.

I saw a new chain brake assemblies (in Poulan green) for a 5200 series, a 3400 and he thought a micro if anyone is interested.

He also has some Pioneer saw parts.

HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY (NEW) SAWS!!, BUT WE CAN ALWAYS DREAM.
As a note of interest.

He pulled out a Pioneer 3200 for which he is looking for an air filter cover and a complete recoil / fan housing assembly. If any of you have those parts he may be persuaded to trade some of his parts with you.

8500 pistons are scarce, scarce, scarce.

I just bought either a 5400 or 8500 Friday just a short time after it was listed on ebay. I really think it is a 8500 with 5400 recoil and clutch cover on it. I dont really care which it is as the top ends are the same on them.

Yeah, this saw was posted in the Craigslist thread and the guy was actually being a smartazz by posting all saw adds from Denver. About 5 saws down this saw was listed and I placed a call, sent money, and it came in. I did thank him and MMark chastised me pretty good :hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

I'm always a day late and a dollar short now days!

You got a nice one there Randy!

If he has the A/V mounts for the S25CVA I would like to have 2 sets (one for the upper 1/2 wrap handle and the lower), also a couple for the rear handle. Depending on the price, I would probably be interested in the 5400, 3400, and 655 chainbrake assemblies if he has any. When you say Micro I'm thinking 1800, 2000, etc type saws. If it is a green one for the S25 count me in. Also if he has any of the K&N type air filter assemblies for the 655 I'd take all he has, please let us know of any full wraps for the 8500, 5200, 5400, 3400, or 655 as I'd be interested in any of these.

I would compensate you for shipping and a some extra for your time.

Thanks,
Randy

Yeah, I wondering if it would really be worth the effort and expense. My 4900 runs really strong.

O.K. I'll head in a completely different direction and try find a pristine 'micro'. I've been wanting one of those to keep in the truck.

I'm curious as to why that is?? :msp_confused:

You also mentioned there was no noticeable difference between the two........how does that relate back to the 4900 spanking the 5200 ?? Just tryin' to learn from the folks that have the experience. :msp_thumbup::msp_thumbup:

My 4900 will spank his 5200 because he runs his on a premix of coal oil and non detergent 30W motor oil.

That and he cant file a chain to save his life :hmm3grin2orange:
