Are you the owner of my old DN built piped gas 084 hotsaw? I sold to Joat and then he sold it, I heard it was in SC or NC still.

That is a real nice PP395 - nice to see it too has the droopy trigger.:D I don't know much, but hasn't it got to be a 4000? I'd love to find one of those. That muffler mod would be good for igniting the wood you are cutting! I really love the yellow Poulans.

You could be right about the 395 and 4000 being very similiar. I have never seen a 4000 in person so I really do not know. They sure look the same except one is yellow one is green. The 395 originally had a chain brake on it, but it had been completely removed before I got it. It would be nice to find a chain brake for it but I am not holding my breathe on that one.

Would one of you be kind enough to post the part numbers(s) of the crankshaft seal for XXV / 25? When I clicked the link it took me the last page of the Poulan thread, & yesterday I searched every way imagineable with no luck.

Is my memory short circuiting, or did the search function here used to have the option of going to the actual post without having to scroll through the thread?

Chris, Go to page 534 (Poulan Stickies) and start at post 7999
To find it I searched on google with 530019051, site: arboristsite.com This will get you to the relevant posts in the Poulan sticky.

See if this helps, Chris. Shows 530019051 here.

So that's how you did it Tim. When I was searching AS I didn't think to use the Poulan part number. Page 534 is indeed where it's at. The CR and SKF numbers for the 190051 crank seal are both 5510.

They are the same saw. Only difference I would note is that the 395's I've seen have a gray air filter cover and front handle covering as opposed the the 4000's black.

An answer, along with a bonus!

Didn't get to the shop last night. Wussed out and hit the rack when I got home instead. Will check today and post back.

Checked the 3400 for the answer to the Homelite 'S' clip question. Fits perfect! Will post pics later.

This lead to another revalation. Bar plates from an early 5/16" stud XL-12 can be used on a Poulan 3400-4000 saw! Inner works perfect as-is. Oiler slot matches 'dead nuts'. Outer plate will work fine once you cut a slot for the adjuster pin with a dremel reinforced cutoff disc. Use the inner plate as a template. The need for this modification stems from the Homelite having the adjuster in the drivecase, while the Poulan has it in the clutch cover. The early Homelite 5/16-18 bar nuts work great on the Poulans too. Again, pics to follow once I return from the shop.

I went out and compared the clutch covers on my S25DA and CVA. They are the same and one will fit on the other saw.
Bob

I have to respectfuly, 'partially disagree' Bob. Just compared my 25DA clutch cover with one from a S25-CVA. They are different parts. The 25DA cover looks like it will still work on the CVA saw however. The CVA cover will NOT work on the non-CVA saws though. I shot pics and will post 'em this evening. Busy in the shop today..

Ok, I'll go ahead and spill the beans. I got a 8500 from Preston and am working on finding out what I need to fix it.

I have never had one apart in my own hands before and have specualted on the differences in it and the prior models. I will have the answers in the near future and will try to photo it all.

I had been under the assumption that there was a difference in the pistons and cases. As of this moment I'm not so sure of piston differences even though they show different part numbers.

The case differences are minor.

Time will tell.....

Here's the same Homelite 'S' clip on the early Homelite XL-12, McCulloch 7-10A, Poulan 306A, and Poulan 3400. Same stud size and spacing. This oughta open up some options. My 306A has another of these 'S' spacer clips along with a Windsor TXL mount bar.

Wow an 8500 that is pretty cool.

Inner early Homlite XL-12 bar plate used without modification on a Poulan 3400.

photobucket-1064-1347849759818.jpg

Outer early XL-12 bar plate next to the 3400 clutch cover. Part that must be removed is marked with black ink. Used the inner plate as a template, as the Homelite inner plate has the slot for the adjuster.

photobucket-21021-1347849749910.jpg

Inner plate drilled with a 5/16" bit in the drill press. Go slow, as this spring steel is tough and the bit likes to wander.

photobucket-12558-1347849754061.jpg

Here's the same XL-12 inner plate after modification. Mounted on the 3400 clutch cover. It's been drilled and then cut out with a dremel tool and a reinforced cutoff wheel, and then cleaned up with a file.

photobucket-21039-1347849755654.jpg

Here's the Homelite XL-12 inner bar plate, along with the 'S' clip and the Homelite bar nuts.

Here's the 3400 runner after a 'kitless' quickie carb cleanout, fuel line replacement, quickie hammer/chisel/screwdriver 'muffler mod' (with the diffuser drilled to 3/8"), and installation of the early Homelite XL-12 bar plates an bar nuts, late Homelite SXL starter handle, and 18" sprocket nose b/c that came from yet another Homelite. Also installed a "rare in the US" chainbrake type clutch cover that just made the long journey accross the sea from the land of Oz. A 'hybrid' chainsaw....

The "subjects". Green electronic ignition S25-CVA and red Craftsman 2.1A (25DA).

photobucket-1694-1347849760868.jpg

photobucket-16930-1347849758242.jpg

Clutch covers from the same saws. Notice that the top edge of the covers is where the differences are. There is a plate riveted to the CVA cover, and there's a 'profiled' section on the top of the red 25DA cover.

photobucket-21036-1347849748886.jpg

photobucket-1224-1347849746374.jpg

The red 25DA cover fits on the CVA saw, and the 'profiled' top edge is mostly hidden. The riveted plate on the top of the green CVA cover hits the handlebar mount section of the 25DA carb box, preventing the cover from seating on the saw.

Great visual comparison photographs, thanks sooo much for taking the time to do this. This will be a great reference post for others in the future that are trying to figure out what their options are when they ditch the PS side cover. I did go check my S25DA (red Craftsman) and it had the PS setup also but someone had already disabled it. Looks like my side cover search is still in progress........I just don't like the look of the PS setup!!!!

And, Lombard Comango or AP42 types. 5/16"-18 tpi studs on 1 1/4" centers.

Both my Lombards sport 20" Homie bars BTW.

While I am not a Poulan afficianado, I do have a PP405 that currently has only 75 lbs compression. It is in the same range (cc-wise) as the 8500, but is from a later era.

That is real nice work Ed - need to bookmark this page for future reference. And nice 3400 there. I wonder how many of those 30 plus year old saws are still running today?

Al.
