I've only rebuilt maybe 4 carbs all on old saws.

I would suppose it's when you clean the carb and put the same gaskets and parts back in...that doesn't happen around here, I mostly work on older saws and they require a kit to run right. Besides that I generally tear up some of the gaskets when I disassemble the carb.

I've always destroyed one or two gaskets so I just replaced them all. Maybe if I need to open the 5 yr old 295 it will be a different story.
Question: Can carb cleaner be used when a gasket won't scrape off intact and you want to save it and still clean the rest?

WoW! That reminds me of my 1981 Pioneer p28

Here's a 3400 I got from a member here for several months ago.

Last December I bought a 1981 Pioneer P28 and it looks as good as that. For some twisted reason I have not even started it up???? I do know it works because the guy I bought it from sent me a video of him running it.
Don't ask me why I have not run it. Might have something to do with my cleaning it inside and out and not wanting to get it dirty. Part of my chainsaw insanity!

The carb cleaner I use comes in a gallon can and you dip the carb in it. After you take it out a gasket would be toast. I don't generally use the spray can stuff. I probably wouldn't try to save a gasket like that, carb kits aren't that expensive.

A guy needs to decide ahead of time which saws he's gonna use and which ones he's gonna display. Ok to clean the user saws just not good to paint them or you'll be more reluctant to use them for the reason you've stated.

will this s-clip work on a 5400? still looking for a d176 mount bar but this clip would widen my options.(are they still made or availible?)i did manage to make an adapter for my big dolmar(husky) mount d033?(have to look ) to fit my 5400. oiler lines up good bar slot was larger.

That same 'S' clip will work on all of the Poulans in that series that have 5/16" bar studs. I don't know if these clips are still being made. D176 bars are still being made, although IIRC the longest ones are 28". The longer ones have been discontinued. Same with the D196 bars.

Thanks for that info. Where's a good source for cheap carb kits?

The kits I have been buying were from my local rip-off yard equipment dealer and they were 15-20 bucks which is almost the same as I pay for the saw. I guess you got a website you can tell me about?

Larry, I don't even bother to save the old gaskets and diaphragms. I find it easier and less time consuming to just use new parts including the metering needle and lever.

My understanding is that some carb manuf. don't recommend dipping carbs. Maybe there are parts that would be affected by the chemical bath.

I know they will ruin a carb, if you leave it in a long time! Last year, I put a carb in to soak. The next day I had an accident and couldn't walk and was stuck in a chair for 2 months. When I got to hobbling around, I went out and removed it, but it was ruined. The butterfly was practically welded shut, wouldn't budge..

Hey Larry - the Web site I turn to first is eBay. Many of the Walbro kits I get there are under $10. You may want to do some digging and see if you have a distributor in your area, we have one near here and prices are pretty good.

Thanks for the comments on the 3400 fellas. I can't remember the name of the guy I got it from. :bang:
He said it was in good shape and he just rebuilt the carb. I wasn't expecting it to be in that good of shape.

I buy them locally at not nearly that price. I've seen some on ebay in the $10 range. The most I've ever paid for one is $12 but that's more than I've paid for some saws also. If not ebay, I would just do a search on the computer and see who sells kits.

I wouldn't recommend leaving the carb in the dip very long, instructions say 10 minutes on the side of the can. I've left them in for an hour or two and it worked fine. Some carbs that didn't come clean I've had to repeat the process. Two months wouldn't be good!

Any pictures?

no action pix but i can always show you a pic of the saw. try for tomorrow

pix as requested. haven't really gotten to put some tlc on it yet but the important parts were tended to. just don't make saws like this anymore. more's the shame. shoulda seen the b&c before i cut; amazing what a little exercise will do for a saw.

Cool saw. If you need anything for it I think there are one or two in pieces in my local previously poulan dealers pile.

i do need one part. while i was cutting the choke rod grommet (part no. 2594) gave up the ghost. i've got both pieces and thought about super glue. new would be even better.
also, needing a sprocket (part no. 4836).
other spare parts are always nice to have. you got a list?
thanks for the offer. jerry

I have been finding grommets in the electrical dept. of my local Ace hardware. In the flat yellow compartment boxes.
