I've got some pine but the danged stuff is knotty and sappy.It's getting a bit far into the fall really.If I could ever get my head ought of my postierier end and finish my bandsaw mill cuttng square cants would not be a problem.
For some reason the thought of chainsaw milling a bunch of 8 by 8's doesn't appeal to me.As far as poplar or cottonwood,it's just not milled much in this area of the country and hard as a rock oak is not what you want to run race type chains in.Besides that you would need a crane to lift it.Geeze that spring cut cottonwood at Woodsjunkies nearly caused this old boy to blow a buggy washer.

Key word NO WOOD. Local mill had punky cants. The next place was a 3 hour drive one way for cants at .50 a BF. for 8"x8"x8' or 10"x10"x8'. Then I had a choice of the 6 hour round trip to my land down south for rounds. I have some trees marked for such.
But the $100 gas bill for the truck alone down and back, plus having to drop, buck, haul out (diesel for tractor), load on trailer and haul back has stopped me so far.

I realize I'm a novice member here but I'm centrally located for a GTG, have the perfect log cradle (Deere5400 w/bodozer grapple), and a ready supply of logs any size. I couldn't have one till dec. 8th or later though. Let me know what you'll think. Bill

I'd like to say I could attend, but I'm 100 miles from Juneau Alaska and 50 miles from the Yukon border. Got our first snow in town here and it's only been 25 for a low and 34 as a high, perfect weather for a GTG. Still waiting for my fallers job to start. Waiting for permits , so been cutting firewood mostly for recreation.
When you think about, hardwood firewood should be twice the price of softwood because softwood is half the weight and half the BTU's. A cord of unsplit dry pine is 200 delivered here and that's in rounds.
So anyway, hope everyone has a blast at C4F's GTG.

Amanda is located about halfway between Circleville and Lancaster off rt22. Easy drive down from the north on 23 or33. From the south on 71 and over 22. I would be willing to organize a GTG on a small scale (about the size Ralph had last spring) and it could even be flexable if weather becomes an issue. Dec. 8th would be the soonest date I would be able to host. Bill
As of now I am in for the Dec 8th, if other dates let us know.
Seemed like only 8-10 was interested up north. But you being from the South central could get them KY and Southern Ohio guys from Cincy up.

Hey guys, I think I might be able to make a gtg but probably wouldn't have a chainsaw to bring since I am at college at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware. It still would be cool to come down and hang out. I might get lucky and find a saw on CL.

C4F and others. Let me check with the boss on the dates before I commit cause you I really never whats going on at my house. I'll start a fresh thread after I get the particulars. It looks as if the 8th and possibly the 15th are the only possibilities to get it in before Xmas. After that the weather is too iffy to plan much ahead till spring. Of course I do firewood all winter long but its on a day to day basis.
Looks like WK stuck his neck out and now is complaining about the weight when everyone jumped on it....LOL... kidding of course.

Hey kev how is the barn coming along?or is it done yet? pics?
Next year running underground electric out to the barn. So I am limited to the work in daylight, running gen, or extension cord still. But at least I got a roof over my head this winter and nice having a area with concrete floor to work on again.

I don't wanna ruin your winter plans, and it's a really nice playhouse you've built, but if you're gonna be relying on daylight, aren't you a tiny bit short on windows..?
LOL you missed the part about using a generator behind barn and extension cords from other garage I take it. Doors open during nice weather. Like yesterday setting saws up for gtg.
