It's possible. My old saw didn't had one and I'm pretty used to not using it/ it not being there.
My buddy is going to check out a Shindaiwa 488 tonight. I'm jealous. Hopefully it's in nice shape.

Do what you will but I find them very useful in bucking especially over cutting. Also makes the saw a little safer IMHO
