Hello Gentlemen
I have two old pieces of literature that show the no-load rpm for the Olympyk 970 (now Efco) at 14,500. I have an owners manual that does not list this information at all. According to the manufacture/sales literature this saw was developed for production softwood logging and the 980 was developed for hardwood logging. The 980 shows no-load rpm of 12,000.When I spoke to my saw mechanic he said that sounded quite a bit fast and thought it may be asking for trouble in the long run especially with a 10 year old saw like mine. I bought the saw new and have never had any trouble with it. A couple of you have spoken about these saws in other threads that I have read. :Eye: I just wonder if anybody knows enough about them or can direct me to someone that could tell me about the optimum rpm for performance of this particular model. I think I rember a thread or two speaking about someone who modifys these saws. Maybe I could get some response from the Pros here. Thanks in advance! :blob5:

look up dave nieger . he can make the olympic really cut up. ive an 962 that is already was good. dave did his thing to it . now she is just real mean to a log. the difference was significant, enuff to make a real difference in the work day. this justifies any modification cost incurred. as to the stock no ld rpm. just do a search on oleo mak ,efco or john deer ,as these are all the saws that use to be olympyk . tilotson distributes now ,i think. good luck, an hope yours turns out as well as mine, should you choose to have it modified.

Thanks Tony
If I can locate a contact (e-mail or other) for Dave Nieger I would like to talk to him and see what or if he can do anything for this beast. Its got great power now but I would like to think that I could get a little more out of it. For a ten year old saw it has been almost flawless and I almost afraid to do anything to it. But it might be a good move. Thanks again for your input maybe someone can put me in touch with him. ;)

dave should see this . id give his number but aint sure he wants it to be put on the post. he ll probably get in touch ,if i get a chance i may call him..
he really can make that saw cut up ,im thinking.. good luck.
ps try to pm him on this forum.

Where did your literature come from? I have a little 951 marked Olympyk by Oleo-Mac. It's actually an Oleo-Mac 951F. The information that came from Tilton lists the no load RPM as 14300. I haven't tached it, but just by comparing it to my other saws I would guess the no load to be closer to 13000 without running it too lean. I just figured Tilton's information was wrong. Either way, the saw is great. If I'm cutting 16" or less, it's the saw I grab.

The literature I believe is a 1994 and 95 Olympyk sales catalog printed by Tilton Equip. I bought the 970 in 1995 new after checking out this literature. Been very pleased with it but just wondering if Ive been getting all the performance out of it that I could. It's a very strong 70cc beast and I pick this one up whenever I run into big stuff on the job. Perfect for a 20" to 24 " bar. I have two Monster Jonsereds that I'm running a 26" and a 32" bars on that I only break out on Bertha trees but the Olympyk and a Jonnyred 2051 are the usuals. Thinking about maybe having something neat done to it. It's just such a great saw I'm having trouble making up my mind whether to leave well enough alone. :p

These Italian saws have lots of torque. I've read that the Olympyks-Efco-John Deeres don't gain much from mods. You might ask some the guys here who have tried it. I have several 50cc saws, the 951, a Solo 650 and a Jonsered 525. The exhaust port on the 951 is much larger than those of the Solo and Jonsered. There may not be much room for improvement. I opened up the muffler and gained a little power. Anyhow, have fun.

just a comment my olympic 962 is [i think] the same as deeres cs62 .
if thats true. this 962 did benefit greatly from mods done by dave nieger.
improved it so much ,im still amazed at the high rpm it holds in heavy cut.
i would not wot on this thing out of cut. just seems like you be pushing the envelope.
probably not but i aint taking no chance,as id be pressed to replace it with an equeal.
i tol;d dave if it did ever sieze ,id just buy an deere 62 and send it to him to work his magic.
