Displacement is the same for the farmsaw,P39, P41, P42 at 66cc. The P38 is around 57 or 58 cc's, if my memory serves me well. The farmsaw series were designed for more casual use such as around a farm and were built with plastic recoils instead of metal ones like the P41, P42. The P41,42 series were professional saws. Recoils are metal with metal internals rather than plastic like the farmsaws. Rings are usually thin on the P41,42 versus thick on the farmsaw. This was supposed to reduce friction and increase performance. Coils are different on the farmsaw and tended to give more problems than the P41,42 series. The P42 is just a newer model of the P41 with some internal modifications to increase durability. When Poulan took over from Pioneer the P41,42 series became a Poulan 405 and was the last of this series.

Great info about these workhorses in this thread. I used the P50 I got from AS member polkat to mill these benches from hickory today. It needs a better chain, but is a very strong saw.

Good looking splits Randy,... did you refile your chain to 10 deg top angle and run the bar like milling with a guide?

Pioneerguy600

No Jerry I just hacked them out as best as I could. Someone had filed the rakers down too dang far on this chain, it was too aggressive to mill with, but noodles well. I hope I'm expressing myself correctly, lol

I understand perfectly. I have milled with the P60 and P62 with a proper milling chain, I have a 48" bar just for that purpose. The bandsaw mill has now taken over that job.

Wow !

Well boys you have certainly been keeping this old thread running as well as fine tuned old Pioneer!

It's been a sad few weeks for me of late with my dear Mom's passing and her service this last weekend but she had a very fine service with some very nice things said about her by family and friends. As an honorary firefighter due to her long time volunteer work at the local fire hall she had a great tribute presented by the hall,it was amazing and she would have been very humbled by that.See you in the next journey Mom!

So I'm starting to get back to the real world now and will be trying to jump in and make some posts. It looks like I have a lot of back pages to be reading to catch up on though.I see some members have made some great finds and there are some new members as well.So welcome to you new fellas and congratulations to those of you that have found some new treasures!

I hated to hear about your loss Lawrence. It's good to see you posting my friend.

Lawrence, I know I expressed my condolences weeks ago, but again, I am sorry for your loss. Glad to see you back!!

Hi guys. I'm just checking in to say hello again and to let you know that I'm still alive. I was super busy at work this summer and fall but I have a week off to go do some hunting and hopefully some cabin building. I'm also thinking about putting some parts on Ebay for the P-series saws. Good to see some new guys on here with interest in Pioneers!

Nice to hear from you again...

I still plan on getting those parts you sent me into my P25. Need to figure out how I am going to paint all the parts next.

Farmsaw

Pioneerman: Does that mean that I should be looking for starter pinion from a 41 instead of the Farmsaw? Im still not convinced that that is the problem, but I did find a place that promised to order me one...but that was 2 weeks ago, and nothing yet. The pinion does not engage with the flywheel. It appears to go full travel on the white recoil pulley, but is about 1/8" short of engagement. I took off the wire compression release, and tried it, thinking it might be that, but still the same. So anyway, I ordered a new pinion....plastic, of course. If the P41 is steel, that might be a better way to go.
I was in the Ace Hardware yesterday, and mentioned the saw issue, and was looking at new stihl's, and the guy said " Pioneer? Is that a brand?"

Thanks

Farmsaw starter pinion advice

rzacc: read this carefully- The pinion is most likely not the problem. The yoke spring that wraps around it is probably too loose. When this happens the pinion gear won't twist all the way out to the flywheel. You either need to take the spring out and bend it so that it's tighter around the pinion or else replace the spring.

Ed, I got the truck done. It was a blast to drive this summer. It smokes the tires with ease and has gobs of torque for towing. I have 4k on the blower now and not a single problem with it. It will easily beat most any stock vehicle in a drag race. Not bad for a 5300 lb truck. I'll get it to the track next summer.

I cannot answer for any Pioneer save my FarmSaw II, but my starter problem (won't engage) was caused by the take up spool not the pinion. The spiral flutes in the second picture should continue to the top. Because they are abraded away the pinion does not engage the engine.

P41 starter will not work on the Farmsaw. The two are designed totally differently for the engagement. The flywheel on the P41 is different. If you replaced the flywheel on the famsaw with a P41, then your ignition won't work, as the modules are different. Stick with the farmsaw setup, and as suggested above look your spring over carefully and check the plastic gear as it is probably the source of your problem.

Hi guys
Really need your help finding a igniton coil for my Pioneer P51 chainsaw or even a whole saw that is running or not that they would consider selling.
