New additions to the family

Hey guys,

I picked up a few more saws last week. A couple of them were Pioneers so I thought I'd post some pics. Got the 620 running today after cleaning the points and installing new carb gaskets, fuel lines and fuel filter. It took more sanding on the points than I ever would have guessed to get to bare metal and a strong spark. The air filter was cobbled together with a scotch brite pad so I stole a flat style filter from an RA parts saw. I expect the filter was not original to the RA so it's come full circle. The gas tank took some serious scrubbing to remove the varnish. Seeing that stuff keeps me from leaving stale fuel in my tanks for very long. I'm going to get the chain on the grinder tomorrow. Then put it in some wood. Really looking forward to seeing it eat some wood! I love the look and sound of these saws.

The NU 17 is not high on the list to get TLC. These saws must have cut well back in the day. There's quite a few out there. The sales couldn't have been based on looks alone.

Nice score!! Great old saws. I've yet to put the RA in some wood, I'd like to try it in some wood sometime!

Nice catch Darcy. Those 17's are pretty homely for sure. A buddy of mine has a 620 hanging on a nail in his shop, been there for years, but do you think he will give it to me?? No way. Rather see it rot I guess.

Someday maybe...;)

If you want a 600 series Pioneer to play with just let me know, I am sure I could find you one....;)

Nice old Pioneers you have there! The green plastic handle on the 620 looks to be in very good shape, quite often you see them they are chewed to rat####

Thanks Jerry, that's a great offer. I will be keeping that in mind if I ever get all my projects finished.:)

Thanks Will. At least you've been able to hear your RA running. Mine is in very small pieces. The 620 will help fill the void until the RA is running again!

Nah? They're one of my favorites! Though I do prefer the green color scheme of the 400.

Brad,
I let out a little sigh of relief when I went through your saw list and didn't see any NU17's or 400's. Lesson learned. Poking fun at a saw's looks could get you in trouble on a site like this!

Nice old Pioneers Darcy, they don`t need paint to run good. They are tough and made to last forever, mine are all running after 52 years of service.

Jerry,
Had the 620 in some white ash today after giving the old Oregon chain a hand file. The lack of paint didn't seem to affect the performance.:) I need to play with the carb more to get it right. I've never tuned a saw that turns less than 13k at WOT. I'll get there. Maybe set this a little rich at 10,500!:)

Thanks Chris. You should PM me the guy's name. Maybe he's my uncle or went to school with my dad or dated my cousin...you get the picture. PEI's too small not to see if you can call in some favors. Or you could just take Jerry's offer!

Hey Lawrence! Agreed. I cleaned up the handle with a little WD40 to cut the grime that was there. I'm really happy with how it looks. The entire handle is in great shape. Doesn't look like the saw was stored on concrete. The bottom of the handle isn't rusty.

Good to hear Jerry! That didn't take that long considering it was shipped in the holiday mail flow.
Lawrence

It will make a nice project, got some NOS pieces hanging around here that might come in handy for this one. Took it out of the box, squirted a little mix in the plug hole and it fired right up, may not take much to make a runner out of it.

Steve, seals are easy to change, pot them out, install new. If you have some wobble, you probably need bearings, which involves splitting the case. Not difficult, just time consuming. I forget the type of gasket material I use, I know it's Felpro's better grade though. The only gasket I use the sealer on is the reed cage to case. All others usually seal great and don't need it. Let us know how the reed job goes. The offer still stands on the coil/flywheel/carb parts if you want to go that route. Sometimes installing a known good part on a saw helps eliminate a lot of head scratching. :)

Thanks again Ed! I've got a PM in to Propliner for parts, haven't heard back (but know it's Christmastime and he's probably busy) yet. I'm thinking I might as well roll in new bearings while I'm into everything else. Heck, ya can still see crosshatching on the cylinder, so I'm thinking this saw probably saw quite a bit of use at one time (judging from bearings, reeds, and some other wear) and got a new P&C fairly recently???

I did the sander trick on the reed cage, and it seats a lot better now, but not quite perfect. I might slap it together tomorrow and see if there's improvement.

Merry Christmas all you Pioneerites out there!

Jerry... I must see pics of the new aquisition.

Steve, PM sent. I have your parts. I have a new reed cage and reeds too, if you're interested.

Merry Christmas to all of you and your families!

-Brendon.

Will get some picts up soon, it will be a project saw, can see some parts that need replacing, just right up my alley.

Merry Christmas to all!

Ahhh,Jerry's new yeller fella,it really is a diamond in the rough Brendon.
Lawrence

It sure is, but that is the way I like them sometimes, more of a challenge to get them right, get to use some of my skills in the teardown and rebuild, might even get to paint if time allows.
