I dont normally post in this thread but I'm sure I will have many questions about my most recent project.
Starting with, is there supposed to be a screen in the sediment bowl like on a tractor?
Also having problems with the recoil. I removed it and lubricated it and got it working free off the saw but when I bolt it on it binds, pulls hard, and wont retract.
The saw is complete, has spark, and compression is good so we are off to a good start.

You can lube the pulley post but absolutely zero oil on any other parts of a Fairbanks Morse starter or you get those issues.

Ok Tim, so is there a tutorial written taking this thing apart and cleaning it and lubing it properly? I tend to have a hell of a time with recoils.
I like the simplicity of Max recoils lol.

Not sure. Leave the dogs or whatever the assembly it's called that grabs the cup together and lay the parts on a bench in the order they came off,. from the clip, flarge ibre washers and dogs I would clean all of that with brake cleaner or whatever but get all the oil off. Pay special attention to getting the fibre washer(s) clean.

No lube of any kind on the starter parts

Thanks. How about an air filter? Is that unobtainium too? This one is in bad shape and was passing a lot of fine sawdust. Looks like someone sewed medical gauze around it at some point trying to get it to work better.

Also.going to need a clutch cover if somebody has something. Doesnt need to be perfect.

Hi again. I was busy recently, but have a few minutes tonight so I looked at and started cleaning my Franken P25 saw again before holidays. Anyways, today's question is regarding air filter, and air filter cover.... I am not sure if all the saws in this style shared the same filers and such, so I would like to ask. The cover is off of a P25 as indicated on the cover decal. On the underside is a thin cloth type filter, along with a small thin porus type filter. Question is the following. Are these both correct for this saw air filter cover?

The pictures are 1. Air filter cover, 2. Air filter underside with both filters, 3. Small thin black filter installed, 4. Thin cloth type filter over the other.

It is not shown well, but the small black filter pictured slides into a slot in the rear of the air filter cover first, followed by the larger cloth type covering it, and it 'hooks' onto two taller posts on the cover just either side of the securing screw. Is there anything or material known that can be used to make a new larger cloth type filter (teh light tan one). Thank you in advance again for any help or advice. If any other pictures are needed or required, I can take them as per request.

Stiff craft felt sheets from a craft/hobby/toy store works well, when cutting new felt style filters. I've cut frames and laminated them with filter or added a layer on top of a pre-existing filter and frame (xl- series Homelites). The material is quite versatile.

That tan coloured filter element is OEM or at least made to somewhat function that way. I haven't seen the other black filter before. It is installed backwards though. I will post a pic.

Here you are sir.

The white felt is a sample of the material I use as well. The sealing ring seals around the carb box and the filter is toward the front where the intake air box is.

I might add, that cover you have is in nice shape. Resist the temptation to kneel on or put weight on that cover when starting. Too many folks busted them up that way. They are delicate.

Awesome. Thank you very much for that. I was kind of wondering about the 'ring' that sealed and how the air filter went on. Now I know, and it makes more sense. Greatly appreciated. Also thanks for posting a picture of teh felt used as I have some here to make a new one with, even if only for a template.

Well I had the 600 running on it's own briefly off of external fuel. Still need to flush out the fuel tank and get all that mess sorted out but I put a carb kit in it that I had in stock and she will be a runner!!!

The 600 now runs on tank fuel but it has a bad crank seal leak on the clutch side (not surprised there) is there an off the shelf seal available for these or are they non existent?

Also still having trouble with the damn recoil. Catches when it feels like it last start, ripped the cord out. What a crap design.
