what would be the areas of interest on that trip. madsens, wood's, what else?

There is the Oregon coast. Like no other. No sale tax here, so you can shop. Wine country is some of the best, if you are into that. Some really big doug fir trees just to the south, as well as at the Bull of the Woods to the east (Bagby Hot Springs is like no other). Casino down the road for gambeling. Fishing is good on a lot of the rivers around here, as well as the deep sea fishing and surf fishing along the ocean. Oregon Dunes are to the southwest, also like no other. Lots of BLM hikes and trails to see waterfalls in the coast range. Silver Falls state park is not far the other side of Salem. There are also the Cascade peaks of Mt Hood, Three Sisters, Mt Jefferson, Mt Reiner, Mt Adams, and Mt St Helens. Volcano park at Mt St Helens now. Crater Lake Natinoal Park is nice. Snow skiing in summer at Mt Hood on Palmer Glacier. Lots of serious dedicated 4WD off-roading places in the Tillimook State Forest area. Great white water rafting/kayaking on the Rogue, Umpqua, Clackamas, Deshutes, and White Salmon Rivers. Columbia River Gorge is always a hot place for sight seeing and surf boarding, Multnomah Falls, and the old highways out there. Then there is Powell's City of Books in Portland. Its a huge and amazing place. If you like flower bulbs, this area has some of the largest growers of dahlias, iris, lilies, etc. Oh, there is the aquarium at Newport. And the cheese factory at Tillimook. If you like to golf, there are too many courses to list. :greenchainsaw:

I've got to let my bosses know that I wont be in on that weekend. Also pray that fire season doesn't start up too early this year either. But if I can wing it. Hell yeah. Count me in!

Down the coast from Lincoln City, is a town called Newport. Go south, across the bridge and take a right turn. Go around on one of those circle type exit things that was planned years ago. You will come out at the South Beach crabbing dock and see, my favorite brewery, Rogue Ales. They have a good bar upstairs with a view of the bay. Excellent beers. I recommend the Hazelnut Brown Ale. They also have Dead Guy Ale, and I think they returned Juniper Ale to it's original name--Yellow Snow Ale. Philomath had a nice saw/logging shop. It is to the east of Newport, over the coast range and near Corvallis, home of the Beavers.

The Newport Aquarium is worth going to. There's actually two. The Hatfield Marine Science Center, and the Newport Aquarium. South of there is a long stretch of beach and then one of the most photographed lighthouses on the coast, the Haceta Head Lighthouse. Stop at the Devil's Churn if the ocean is rough, waves slam into a narrow inlet and spray up in the air.

Speaking of, just south of Lincoln City, in Depoe Bay, there's the spouting horn. Waves slam in and shoot up through some holes in the rock. Pretty cool, but I'm easily impressed.

You might see some whale spouts off the coast. Gray whales cruise up and down the coast.

If there's stinky purple winged jellyfish on the beach, (you'll smell it) it means time to look at the tide tables and head down to the beach to look for the glass fishing net floats. The stinky jellyfish mean the current is right for bringing those into the beach.

You can rent a wet suit and try surfing too, but the Oregon and Warshington ocean is cold. Kind of like Lake Superior. Makes your ankles hurt when you wade in it, but eventually they go numb. There's a surf shop in Lincoln City.

North, somewhere around Nehalem Bay, you can rent touring kayaks and paddle around. There's buried pirate treasure somewhere on Neahkanie beach.
We'd visit there during summer vacations at my Aunt and Uncle's house. There was always somebody with a backhoe looking for treasure. That area was quiet then, fishing, logging and dairying were the ways folks made their living. Now it is tourists.

Go north and there's Seaside. You are now within an easy drive of Portland so things are more yuppieized. Go on and you can cross the Columbia at Astoria on the bridge. It's a long bridge. At Skamokawa, you can rent kayaks again and tour the lower Columbia. Head over to Longview, Woods Logging is located there. On up I-5 about 45 minutes is Chehalis, and you ought to know what is there. That's it for my travel advice. Unfortunately, the roads to the volcano are usually still snowed in. You can go to Paradise, which is at the base of Rainier. They keep that open year round.

Dang, I forgot about the air museum at Tillamook. They turned a blimp hanger into a museum. Its one of the places I've meant to go to, but never did. The Spruce Goose was either there for a while or is still there.

And I keep forgetting to make a reservation. Maybe tomorrow?

Spruce Goose is at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, OR. www.sprucegoose.org

It is fully restored and could fly if they would flood the museum. lol

Plenty of other aircraft there and almost all of them are air-worthy. I believe the space museum is open now. Also a new IMAX theater that opened a year or two ago.

Mr. HE:cool:

OK, guys I'm in  Kate's just booked the flights. We leave early next week. Talk about last minute :dizzy: Only down side is the flights are into San Francisco, but we didn't get to spend long enough in Redwood NP or the Oregon cost, so we can do all that again.

Looking forward to meeting up with you all again

Likewise. Is your other half coming?

Don't temp me! I do like the 346  I'm going to try to get to Madsen's before the GtG, but I don't think I can afford any saws this time.

PM me if you want anything bringing over.

yep other half is making me bring her. LOL

That potato recipe makes about 12 servings... a lot of potatoes. They freeze great; makes for quick easy side when time is tight and its a pleasant change from the everyday potatoes.

I'll be driving in Saturday morning, probably with a friend who also uses and collects chainsaws. I'm not sure what the official head count is. Count me in for two people.

If today's weather is an indication of what we will see next weekend, it should be a dandy.
