Heck yeah he is! That's what it was born to do, and that's what it was
Re-born to do. Let that rascal eat!!!

Came out really nice. I have one of them sitting in my shop right now for sale. i have a spare case if anyone needs one.

My last post?

This will be my last post I on the 3400 I think, unless sometime amazing happens that makes me feel like I need to add to this thread.

I am calling this project finished. The saw starts and runs, idles forever, accelerates like a Lambo, and is fairly smooth to boot. I put some hockey tape on the handle today and managed to snap some pics before the sun set.

I would like to share the FINAL fruits of my labor with you guys now and recognize some people who have helped get me here.

rms61moparman thank you for the support and the shop manual, even though I muddled my way through it it was a really nice gesture and makes a great accessory to the saw.

Kyle, from Edge and Engine- thank you for helping out with a whole bunch of new parts and thanks for putting up with me and being paitient while I figured out what I needed.

All the rest of you, and Stihlsawing especially for the kind words.

If anybody feels like giving up some rep for me though, I would apppreciate that too.. This project consumed most of my spare time for a month! God knows my wife didn't give any rep!

Anyway, here are the pics, best to post them now before the paint gets all scratched up!

Brian'
I sure wish we weren't so far apart. It would be neat to get our 3400s in the woods together. I'd have to bring a towel to cover mine up with so it wouldn't be jealous.

Well, $hit.

I was messing with it yesterday and the idle picked up, it was almost out of fuel so I refueled it and the idle was still too fast. Then, almost instantly it started to run away and after a few seconds of it accelerating to a way too fast speed I shut it down. It did not sieze but it now has no compression. The compression is so low that it won't restart and if I set it on the workbench I can pull almost all of the recoil rope out w/o picking up the saw body.

I think either one of the crank seals let go or possibly the crank case halves have sprung a leak between them and sucked in air. I don't know why there is no compressions yet when I pulled the muffler the rings and cylinder bore looked perfect.

Back to square one I guess! At least I have a spare cylinder and piston in case either of these got trashed. Looks like since I'm going to have to split open the cases I'll go ahead and install new crank seals and maybe bearings too.

BUMMER! Wish me luck!

I just hate when that kind of :censored: happens. After all the hard work and effort and time spent doing it to make it be like new.
Then when you are finished and try it out, some unexpected / unexplainable thing happens. Back to square one.
Been there, down that and I hate it when it happens. Why can't stuff work like it should from the get go? Who knows.
Hope you get your problem solved. Sounds like ring is not seating real well or else lots of gas getting in cylinder. Hope it is something real simple such as piece of dirt between seat and needle in carb.
Good Luck getting it fixed!! JC

Not so bad!

The cylinder came loose from the crankcase. Either I didn't tighten the cylinder bolts down enough, or there is supposed to be locktite in there. I didn't use any BC I didn't see any residue on the bolts but I think I might pull them out and put a little on there. It did not seem to damage the gasket, once I tightened it down it popped right off.

Thank goodness

Brian,
MAN, I'm glad to hear that it wasn't worse. You will be able to take that saw apart and rebuild it blindfolded before long. I believe I would put the loctite to that little jewel this time.
I appreciate the kudos in the earlier post. I wish I could have done more to help. Good luck!!!

Proof of life.

There wasn't anyone at home this morning to photo me in the act but here is "proof of life".

It runs really good. It has a lot of chain speed- much more than my promac 10-10 but it also has a little less torque but a lot less vibes. I'd say it will probably cut right with the mac in big wood speed wise IF you don't bog it too hard and it will almost certainly outcut it in smaller wood when you can keep the rpms up closer to peak. I'm very satisfied with it, shame that Poulan can't make such quality anymore.

I knew you would like it once you finished it. It looks natural setting there with a little dust on it.
Did you locktite the cylinder bolts?
Now get busy and edit that fine mosheen into your sig.

Yes, I did use blue loctite and I used an inch lb torque wrench and set them to 80 in lbs which seemed VERY tight to me but the manual you sent called for 80-100 inch lbs. so thats what I did.
