Some folks, if they truly feel that strong about it, should make the ultimate sacrifice and permanantly eliminate their carbon footprint. And it's the kind of sacrifice that keeps giving in that there would hence be no offspring creating more carbon footprints generation after generation.

This idea might actually appeal to those carbon soldiers marching way out on the extreme end of the green movement. They essentially view humans as a virus infecting the planet, so why not start the cleansing with themselves?

I agree with you, but how would an enviro fairy off himself? He couldn't hang from a tree. (Might break a branch and hurt the tree). Can't shoot himself (scared of firearms and unable to operate one) Can't pull his car into a closed garage and start the engine (pollutes the air) Maybe a drug overdose? (Nahh that would add profit to the big mean drug company) So they'll probably just keep on prancing around being dead wrong on every issue.

her entire life I suppose. She died a very early death I reckon as statistics are showing.. Now I wonder how long she could have lived if they had heated all 95 years of her life with electric?>

Mine too Eric - 95 years old - And, most everything she ate was cooked up in a big old black frying pan, on the WOODSTOVE!

I guess I'm not that radical about it. I think everyone should be more aware of their impact on the environment. Everybody that's only eaten fish at Red Lobster should see a fish gutted and filleted. Maybe eat a tomato off the vine, still warm from the sun. Smell a working dairy farm. Vast swaths of population have no clue as to what keeps their lives so comfortable. Just raising awareness of how each of our lives affects things might do a lot to change attitudes.

I'm willing to cut down a tree for lumber. But I also recognize the idiocy of cutting down all of them. I would hesitate to cut an old growth tree. Not because I'm a tree hugger, but because old trees are very cool.

I do get really bugged about bad science and people - especially politicians - that use flaky science to make their rhetorical points.

Agreed. A lot can be done to make wood burning more efficient as well. As long as it stays a marginal heat source in the U.S. then it won't get regulated to death.

Your point is well taken but it is not marginal everywhere. In my state (Maine) we have the heaviest dependency on heating oil in the country, which can get quite expensive, hence wood burning is very common.

The day that someone knocks on my door demanding I put my fire out is likely the day somebody's daddy/loved one goes bye bye. I'll just sit there by the fire waiting for the backup to arrive. They're driving us to it and they're asking for it if they don't leave us alone. This country is "led" by some of the most twisted humans on the planet. Wouldn't let them on my lawn much less adknowledge their "leadership." I tell you what friends, the coming months/years are going to be a jaw dropping dictatorial cluster F beyond belief. Good thing all the illegal aliens will be legal soon, right? Gee, I wonder how they'll vote? Circling the bowl. We are circling the damn bowl.

You said it good enough for me, I have nothing to add except

X2 baby!!

I agree wholeheartedly with your first statement!

....but just one year ago, if someone offered up a prediction that within the year, the govt. would be regulating automobile companies, banks, and insurance companies - determining executive salaries and voiding negotiated bonuses - deliberately destroying personal and corporate wealth - and would be well on their way to having complete control of national healthcare.......I would've told them that they were nutty and suggest that they quit the posse comitatus meetings.

Never underestimate a bunch of bureaucrats on an unencumbered power grab.

True. But Maine is mostly rural so the overall density of wood heating is low. Heating oil is nasty stuff. I went to all propane recently.

Politicians love power and control. But I can't see any big gains in that area if they come down hard on wood heating. It's a small fish. That said, the environmental lobbyists are awful big. They could make trouble.

The only way to stop these morons from dragging wood burning down(along wth the rest of the country economy-wise) is to step up and get involved. The problem with getting involved, is that anybody with a wisp of common sense runs screamng from the thought of holding a public office....myself included. But, if we don't, then the idiots will continue to rule.
I have spent my whole life avoiding politics, but I am now wondering what damage I have caused by sticking my head in the sand.........:buttkick:
Maybe it's not too late, but the other choice is limited to sitting on the porch with a rifle when "they" come to get you, and I kinda think that one will end badly.

LOL. My feelings exactly. I'm one of those irritating folks that says what's on my mind with not a whole lot of editing - not rude, just straight up. I'd have the entire town board hating me. Every time I opened my mouth they would recess the meeting so they didn't have to listen to me.

The only thing I hate worse than politics is New York State politics.

I don't recall the exact numbers but one volcano eruption produces multiple decades of "man made pollution".

Which pollutes more..a winter of Minnesotan wood burning, or a summer of California wildfires...?

Lot of people need to get their head out of their arse.
All good points.

We have a small fire going on here and the smoke it's producing is enormous. But it's nothing compared to the California fires from last year. They were hundreds of miles away yet the smoke was so thick here we couldn't see the freeway a half mile away.

So, I think the best thing we can do for our health and safety would be to properly manage our forests by keeping the tree density per acre at a reasonable limit. I also support using the newer technology wood burning stoves, but I have to admit, we don't have one. If we can reasonably thin out the forests and use modern stoves to heat our homes, it would be a win/win situation for everyone and would really cut down on those nasty fires.

Forest Fires Burn the Bulk

True about the forest fires. I believe 95% of all the wood and biomass burned in the nation is done by forest fires. Residential wood burning accounts for less than 3%. The other 2% is commercial and industrial (including prairies), and then building fires gobble up that last few chunks of the biomass burned.

Pointing the finger at wood stove burners for major air pollution is nonsense. That's MHO.

But that's how our government operates. It completely ignores the obvious and focuses on the insignificant as the cause or solution to a problem. It's utterly incomprehensible how they can get it so wrong so much of the time.

Now California wants to add to their air pollution by letting everyone spark up a joint. Yep, more potheads on the road, but look at all the tax revenue they can generate. Lives for dollars.

Add to air pollution by letting everyone spark up a joint? I hope you're being sarcastic. When cops discover the pot crops and chop them down guess what the lawmen do next? BURN THE DAMN PILE!

Like they are not already on the road.
California is just trying to make a buck where a market already exsists.
I do agree with the 1st part of your statement....it's how our goverment operates.
Let's see ..I pay taxes then I pay taxes on the money I get to pay taxes and when I buy stuff I pay more taxes. Then because I smoke I pay more taxes to pay for child care.
So now I get a second job to afford to pay taxes only it put's me in a higher tax bracket which makes me pay even more taxes.

What am I getting for all of these taxes....big goverment oh yippeeeee ki aye!

If it were not for burning wood and adding that 3500$ to my budget I'd have to go ask for Goverment health care which I would not qualify.
I could take some more money out of my SEP IRA ,to buy healthcare but then my taxes would go up even more.
On top of all that I just got my letter from the Social Security people and they say that although I've paid in enough for benefits that by the time I need them I'll be looking at a 25% decrease in the benefits due me plus they say they are going to be out of money when I retire.
Yet I keep paying.

Burning wood makes my house warm and it costs very little.
I do burn in a very efficient furnace...no smoke from my flue 85% of the time...only on start up.
My mortgage is a hair more than what I get back from my wood earnings....thank God for the ability to heat cheaply.

Ya start talking goverment and I just get pissed.
Now if I could only find a sugar moma that's a federal employee....I could go onto easy street.
should start hanging out in more post offices.
You say you got a pension and a boat.....helllllo darlin!
