First impressions on the Estwing 8lbs maul in comparison to the Fiskars 8lbs maul.

Way less vibration gets to your hands and shoulders with the estwing. The handle shape is much flatter sided so its easier to control the head. Still has the rubber on the handle which i hate but it is what it is with a molded handle. Just put a nice hook at the base of the handle and make the rest smooth for gosh sakes !!My preference tho.

The head doesn’t get stuck as easy. I really like the shape of the wedge/head. Seems to splits better but i need more time with it to know for sure.

Down side is i dont think there is metal in the handle up by the head so once that rubber is gone the fiberglass/plastic blend is up for a test. The fiskars will win this one I bet as it has a metal pipe inside and it seems basically indestructible. if you split with the tire method like I do, the handle gets beat up more when you’re reaching for the logs in the middle of the tire and on the other side of it and what not. Think you catch my drift. I love using a tire as I can just go at it and splitting is way fast. If you don’t use the tire method i bet this will last a long long time.

Im pleased with it for now. Keep ya posted.

Side note: my son’s first comment was “dada! Its really cool because it is Michigan colors” 🤣. So we have the approval of an 8 year old too👍🏻
But ... Can either of them compete with an X-27???

I think it depends a lot on how you swing it, and how accurate you are. Also, on the endurance end of it, IMO the X-27 can't be beat.

When I was under 60 the weight may not have been an issue, but it is now. That said, I don't have a problem putting speed on it, but we all have different styles, so different stuff may work better for others.

There are also very few things I can't split with an X-27 that can be split with a handheld device. However, speed and accuracy are important. If you start a crack, you have to be able to finish it.

I just don't like swinging an axe more then I have to, when i have a maul that works in one hit. More then a few hits, it's going on the splitter or getting saw treatment.

lmao:lol:

the king of kings!!! the X27:crazy:

the x27 wont touch most of the oak I need to split. iv got one but I save it for things that are easy to split when I don't need to swing 8lbs. its a good splitting axe but it is def not a maul. x27 has my absolute FAVORITE handle. not the one with the orange on it but the all black smooth fiber plastic one, 36" variety.

i do have a question related to splitting and ease of splitting. iv never split Dough fur, anyone split good hard wood like oak and Doug fur? how easy is Doug fur to split vs a good hard wood?

I've heard that before someplace 😆.
Let a buddy of mine borrow my x27, he said on the fiscars site they said to place a wedge in the crack you created with your first swing( maybe 2nd or 3rd if you ain't that good lol), then remove the axe so you have a larger crack to shoot for. I like the x27 for the black locust, but that stuff will act like a brand new hit every swing if you don't hit the exact same spot.

More than I have to mostly means at all for me 🤣. It's obvious(at least to anyone who knows me) that I'm not afraid of a little work, it the lot of work that scares me away lol.
I need to figure out why the splitter I have isn't busting thru everything easily. As long as it's small it goes right thru, butbit doesn't seem like it's getting into the second stage ever before stalling the motor.

From the pics, I would say no. Even if it there were ANY improvement it would be so minor as to not matter. I'll stick to my X27. I'm on my 2nd one. First one died an honorable death by laying under a log I was bucking. Even with a saw cut half way through the handle it was still serviceable.

Did you get the new one on warranty?

if your referring to my pics, iv tried the x27 enough times on this oak. that's why its in the garage. I usually use the x27 dang near exclusively. iv got over 30 cord thru one of them and have a brand new one ready (its been sitting for 5 years in the packaging) when the first one breaks. the x27 just aint cutin it for this wood 90% of the time. sure the limb wood it can handle just fine but im not switching back and forth from maul to x27 to maul and so on. that drives me nuts.
👍👍

for those of you up N with too cool of temps. my shop, a/c OFF 2 pm yesterday...

It's funny, heat never really bothered me. But the last few years it just creeps up on me. Yesterday I was helping a friend put the banister on his MIL's deck. Buy the time we finished up I was feeling like crap. Got home and happened to look at the temp on my truck. Outside was 89. My neighbor was having a cook out for her Mom's 99th birthday. She said it was almost 100 earlier in the day. I drank about half a gallon of peach tea before I started feeling better.

That's what I'm talking about. I have at least a dozen saws over 100CC's, and 20" bars on a couple of them. All of my axes are on display boards because one of those saws can noodle a big block faster than any of those axes can split one.

If someone played with the shift pressure it will stall out before it goes into second stage. Some pumps you can set, typically around 700psi (ish) to low volume high pressure. Thays how we rock tiny little engines with 21gpm... on 5" cylinders backed imwith 3k psi...

Hope everyone had a great Father's Day weekend!
Went to a tractor pull Friday night with my boys and my FIL. Here's a little video of a 4wd Pro Stock truck.

Got seven on Saturday.20230617_084915.jpg
Had a tough bite on Sunday but both were nice, a 16 and a 20 pounder.
