This Red Alder is 21 inches diameter for 20 feet, then tapers off slightly.. Going to mill it tomorrow.. About 55 year old... One of our few hardwoods.

Lake, another thing we don't get back East are trucks that old that aren't all rusted out! That Mazda looks great in the photo, so I know that's never been in upstate NY. Import trucks of that era were like Alka-Seltzer tablets in the Northeast.

(or is it a Dodge/Mitsubishi?)

Mazda B2600i.. Mitsubish engine/electronics/transmisson etc.. Bought it new in 1990, beat the crap out it ever since. Heck, I moved 5 cords of wood in today - about 14 trips, all way over weight.... 130k... just main mufflers (8!, but 7 are for free due to lifetime warranty on parts), and brakes. Can go anywhere in low ratio 4wd.. It's NEVER been parked inside the garage. Gets a pressure wash every spring to get the slime off.

Rust is pretty much a non -issue out here. No salt (well... rarely) on our roads make a big difference..

Love the 28" 70cc saw for limbing. The 066 has 32 and 42 for big stuff.

Yes, I have a 371XP with a 28" bar skip chain. However I bucked up some wood today with my Walkerized 395XP 37" Tsumura bar, skip (of course) what fun.

I can see where a long bar has it's place.

A 20" bar works for me just fine.
Tromping through the woods with a longer bar then what is needed is senseless around here.
And there is no need to carry a saw over your shoulder. thats why balance is important.
using a 16" bar is awesome for limbing if the tree allows you.

why bring a rino gun when your hunting deer.

longer means less work

longer bars mean less work. on the west coast in some cutting situations because of pondersa pine trees and doug firs pitch deposits near the ground the butts close to the ground are several inches bigger than the dbh diamater so the longer bar means less work. short bars are better suited to low powered saws and tight working areas.:rockn:

You know Manual, I think a 20" bar is the shortest I have! ;)

You know, I've tried to beat this into peoples head's around here, but it is pointless.. Limbing with a 084 and 41" bar is just retarded.

Good post, to say the least.

wonder what would happen if i put a 12" bar on a husky 3120?....fastest cookie cutter ever? :D
