Froggy,

You asked about some ethical issues. Insurance is a no brainer. You MUST have it to cover damage or someone getting hurt. Even if you're doing "Cut and Run" work, think of this possibility. You cut the limbs and walk away. Someone walks onto the yard and gets hurt from tripping on "your" brush. Do you think that you'll be able to hide behind the "C&R" issue, I don't think so. Insurance is too cheap to not have a basic policy. Are you married? Children? How would you support yourself and pay medical bills if you got hurt? What if you were killed? Say these two words, over and over:

Widow Orphan
Widow Orphan

The other issue is side jobs. Since you're using your cell phone for advertising, I'll bet that you'll take a call while on company time. Don't you think that this is cheating your boss? Taking phone calls on break or lunch is a different issue. A good relationship with your boss will soon sour if you take calls for side jobs. One week you'll get a paycheck and a pink slip. Is it worth it?

I tell all of my climbers that they can do sidejobs but they can't interfere with my work. They need to be rested and ready to go in the AM. If they EVER see a potential job when they're on my payroll that they go back and solicit later, they can just keep on working, we're done. I'll pay a commission for any work that they might see though.

JPS and I must work for the same company. My boss can be a jerk sometimes too :) Do you know my boss, John?

Tom
