A co-worker ask me about a Stihl 009L, told him I don't know a thing,
but I would ask. So what can you tell me? It will be used for yard work
and in trees a little for deer stand work. He found a store that has them
new for $260. Told him I thought the MS180 would be a better bet for his
money, but he likes the looks of the 009L ;) and I don't what to push him
to a saw and he not be happy with it later, I have to work with him.
And when did they stop making them?

I was told they are a nice little saw. A little more of a pro type saw than the more recently discontinued 009EQ. I did a lot of small time work with my 009EQ and it was great for what it is. Having been told the 009L is a better saw than that, if you can get one NOS, go for it. Its only drawback is its a little heavy if you are going to climb with it all day and its not a true top handled saw which may be better for an occaisonal user. I would recommend either 009. Good little saws.

I have a 009l with a new chain that I'd be happy to let go for $125. It isn't the saw that my 460 mag is, but for what you describe it should do well. If Interested in the saw pm me. By the way the 009 has not been sold in the usa for better than 5 years.

Thanks, but he want's a new saw. My co-worker and I have talk saws
a little, he said the MD was 0506, so that would make this
saw made in June of 2005, he said they have 2 brand new
on the shelf at a Stihl dealer.

Trigger Time - please contact me either on or off-list. I have been looking for a dealer who still has a new 009L for about a year now. I'd like to buy the 2nd one from that dealer you mentioned. Maybe we can get a deal on two. Thanks - Finnbear

I have an older 009L and it's a nice saw for what it is. I use it for limbing mostly, or letting kids use it as it's easy to teach because it lighter than any other saw I have. It's still a relatively low hour saw, but it's been trouble free.

009s rock

I used alot of them in my early days.Back then we didnt change spark plugs the boss just bought another one. They have mad power and excellent balance for a ground saw.

With the rpms to just cut thru with no bogg.

IMO great saw,sad to see they discontinued. The 017 never has panned out as The 009 predessor.

I've got two 009s. One is at least 25 years old, probably older, as my father was given it second hand. The other is about 15 years old. Both have done reasonable hours, been low on maintenance and work very well indeed. I'd highly recommend them for clear up work - light and powerful. I rather prefer them over my 024, which is only about 6 years old.

I also hope to teach my kids how to use a saw with the 009s! They're a bit young at the moment (4 and 2), but certainly showing interest.

My 2004 catalog shows an 009L. My 2006 catalog doesn't and I don't have a 2005 version so its safe to say they were discontinued a year or two ago.
Finnbear

Finnbear, I sent you a PM, The 009L saws are sold. With the ice storm
here the home owners are buy small saws like mad to cut limbs out of
the yards. This is my yard, it has few, compared to others. I have over
3 miles of fence on the farm, mile or more on the ground now :(

I had heard that 2006 was the last year for the 009L in Canada, after already being DQed in the US

By the way I love mine, in tree or on ground. Good torque and great throttle control.
