I was just having a good look at an MS270 with a fresh back from Stihl school tech and he showed me what great people the folks at Stihl are by making the Quick Chain adjuster standard on this model and the MS280. Real proud of himself and his association with such a fine company who freely places such technological advancements on the market, at no cost to the consumer, LOL. Things quickly turned sour though and the smile dropped from his face when I asked "what the heck is that, how do you remove it?" when I saw the black plastic and metal pin assembly that looks like it would be in the way when you place a bar on the saw. As he quickly ushered the saw from view of my critically prying eyes he informed me that the pin is an integral part of a new safety system that Stihl has developed that will only let you put certain(proprietary) bars on these saws that will in turn only let you use certain(propreitary) "safety" chains in the interest of protecting the consumer. I asked him how they could prevent a person from running any chain they want without changing the pitch or guage to something that is non-standard and he just gave me a "look". All this has got me rolling on the floor. Why haven`t any of you Stihl fanatics who are "in the know" mentioned this???? Russ

For the first time in my life, I am truly disappointed with a Stihl saw that I bought. The fixed high speed jet on the 026 (and now on EVERY Stihl saw on the shelf at my dealer) is a Royal PITA. I was ready to trade in my 026Pro on a new one yesterday but refuse to buy another saw with this screwed up carb setup. I guess it's time to start looking at other brands. :(

I looked at the 270 but rejected it based on the carb. I didn't even notice the pin you mention.

never fear

Hi Brian, never fear, Gypo Logger is here. I have 3 brandnew, in the box, MS260 Arctics, with high and low semi fixed. Let me know what one is worth to you and we can go from there. The heated carb is a plus in Florida, it eliminates water score on the intake side due to high humidity. Plus it was made in Germany, as if this matters. The Virginia Beach plant equals or exceeds that of Germany, so I am told. I can sell you the powerhead only for a paltry 425 delivered. With a 13" bar and 3/8 square chain, it makes a good allround saw. I blasted thru several 24" stems with mine after I JDed the muffler, but keep your rakers at 18-20 thou., on this classic little saw that will never loose it's value if you look after it, which I know you do already.

Fixed jet 026 Pro

I also have a "FIXED" jet 026 Pro and am very unhappy with the performance. So much that it has been sitting on the shelf waiting for my old adjustable carb 026 to die. This way i can transplant the old carb to the new saw.

Does anyone have the part number for the old Walbro carb on the 026?

Thanks

GeorgeW

If he told you the 280 comes with the QCA, he is a dumbass.

Both saws come 2 or 3 different ways...

If it's true that stihl is making the 280's and 270's so that you can't put any bar and chain you want on it than that's pretty messed up. I would never buy such a saw or recommend it to anyone. Somebody please tell me that the 280's and 270 also come the "normal" way. (I haven't payed that much attention to these models even though everyone was talking about them cuz they don't concern me).

Between the screwed up gas caps, the fixed jet carbs and proprietary bar/chain requirements, it seems like Stihl is trying to see just how badly they can screw up a chainsaw and still sell it based on previous reputation. I didn't want to admit it before, but other's comments here lately have been correct. Looks like Stihl is going to lose a lot of market share as long as they continue on their current path of the last 1-2 years. It seems like every aspect of the new saws is less user-friendly than before. :(

Ok ladies heres some 270-280 info.

MS270C Woodboss Regular saw with QCA $350
MS270 CQS, QCA, Quick stop, Decompression $400

MS280 Comes Just like the MS260. $370
MS280 CQS, QCA, Quick stop, Decompression $430

The QCS models come with Quick chain adjuster, Quick stop chain brake system(worlds saftest saws), Decompression valve, Elasto start grip.

The MS280 is a regular saw, like any of the others...

MS270 and MS280 both use 3003 series barmounts, Just like most of the other saws(MS290, 260, 310, 360, 460 ect...)

Both come with .325 pitch chain.

Cubic Inches
3.02 for the MS270
3.29 for the MS280
compare
2.97 for the MS260
3.45 for the MS290

Settle the arguments....

Interesting data JimL, but how do you make the bar from an 029 fit either of these new saws with that goofy @ssed pin in there or are you going to tell me that I didn`t really see it? It doesn`t really matter what we say here, at least now any of the guys who read this post will be educated when they go looking at them and will know enough to check it out. Russ

Yu must be seeing stuff, Theres no pin or whatever your thinking of?

Maybe your thinking of the limiting pin for the AV system?

They both use a 3003 series bar which fits 90% of the stihl saws or more.

Stilhtech, what looks "pro" to you about the internals of the MS270? Can you share details. Does it have a seperate cylinder and crankcase or does it have the cylinder/case half with a cap like the 029? Crankshaft and connecting rod looks like the pro saws? Nice sturdy crank with big (high quality) bearings? Just curious to know what you found.

BTW, I`ll be TDY for a few days so I won`t have access to a 270( Stihl anyway, maybe a Winchester) for a few days, but when I get back I plan on posting a pic of "the pin that doesn`t exist" on the 270 that limits your bar and chain choices. Russ

Stihltech and Jim,

Why do you even bother with this guy. :(
