If you go to the "chainsaw selector" at the Stihlusa website
http://www.stihlusa.com/chainsaws/stihldealer/index.html
and indicate that you are a farm or firewood cutter who uses the saw once a month, you will get the 029 as a suggested option behind the 026 and 026 pro. If you say you are a farm or firewood cutter and use your saw several times a month, you get kicked up to the 036 Pro and the 029 is not offered as an option.

It seems to me like that is fairly straightforward marketing. The 029 delivers more power for less money than the 026 - surely any consumer (not born yesterday) would realize there must be a reason why that would be true.

sound logic stihltech. running chinsaws and drinking and talking about running chainsaws, should be at different ends of the day. absolutely.

I'm good friends with a guy that sells motorcycles. He takes it real hard when a customer of his gets hurt or killed on a bike he sold. I would imagine it's just as tough when it happens to a guy you sold a saw to. I keep telling my friend that the equipment is rarely to blame when these things happen. You have to remind yourself that from time to time bad or horrible things will happen to good people despite anything we try to do to stop it.

In Ky. we only drink when we hunt. Stihl is absolved of all sin.
Do they still have a good calender?
But still, the 036,039,026,029,ms310 are listed on the same
page under Farm and proffessional use, the 029 is the only one
called the "Farm Boss", so by logic, the 039 and ms310
must be proffessional as there is no Farm on it. Not really
trying to get the Stihl nuts in an uproar. But to the hapless
consumer who may or may not correctly deduce that the 029/039
310 saws are inferior, it is deceptive. By using cute words like
"occaisional use" and "homeowner" are just sales tactics to
hide the fact that these saws are not made as well.
I really don't care that Stihl has gone this route, but don't try
the sales babble here please. That really shouldn't muddy up
the discussion here, as most of these guys here know a junky
saw when they see it. As far as being politically correct and
not using the word drunken, I am guilty as sin. I don't
go over too big on the Christian forums either.
But I will call a truce. I affirm Stihl's right to sell "homeowner"
saws. I await the orange and white "wild thing" coming soon
to Lowes.

Morning all,
My Stihl dealer used no deceptive tactics to sell the 021 and MS290 purchased.I was/am under no illusion they are
pro quality saws.I do consider boths saws to be fine quality for occasional "home owner" use.If I used the saws everyday to earn a living it would have likely been a mistake,my fault,to buy these saws.I don't use them everyday and they are the right tools for my use.
Time to buy a new battery charger for my pro quality 18 volt DeWalt drill. It's 2 years old,I wonder about pro quality!
OH,might even buy some good ole Kentucky Tavern, can't stand that Canadian Mist!

consumer saws

Fish this thing really sticks in your craw! Did you have a dealer try to sell you one as a pro saw? I would find the nearest Husky and throw it through his front door.

Hey, you told me not to take this too seriously:D

Not really. What is annoying is a newcomer that
parts the red sea, claims guru-hood because he has
worked at a Stihl dealership for 20 years, and says that
the 029/017 crap is high quality, just "consumer",
"occaisional use", but still the best. Or Stihl the best.
I have a certain disdain for anyone that uses their
favorite brand in their handle, as they cannot see anything
but things in their own eyes. You got a hearty welcome
by your entrance on this forum claiming to be an "expert".
Which is fine. It is odd that the other "experts" have been silent
on this thread. I will not back down from a disagreement just
because you have the "support" of a lot of the newcomers
to this forum. The little "drunken" tangent was a poor attempt
at detracting from the discussion, as I have not noticed you
confronting the Canadians for their reference to drink, as you
know that would not be advisable.
I have no particular "sticking in the craw" with this subject,
as I have written Stihl off as sellouts long ago.
I do have a reputation for not backing down just because the
popular opinion is against me, so I must stay with that.
I have been working on this dung for awhile, so I must
change my handle, so I shall be henchforth known as
"AndreasTECH"
But I know dog poop when I step in it, whether homowner,
occaisianal use, or Farm.

well

OK
the 017 is crap
the 029 is NOT
MY opinion is from repairing any brand that comes in the door, which I do 90 percent of the time. Sorry if my handle offends anyone But YOU seem to be the only one who is taking this seriously. AND yes I did come here with the intention of helping out anyone who is having a problem with any brand I am famaliar with. SO if that is a problem with you SO BE IT!
Now for anyone else on this forum, I would be glad to help out where ever I can
Thank You
PS mine does stink

Well at least we agree on the 017. What about the fs36
series trimmer? Do they still have a good calender?
I don't like the Stihl chain grinder while we are at it.
I repair them all as well, at least I got you to give up
the 017.

fish

I did not sell some models. NO 019. FS36, yup. Most are still going, just won't shut off.
Calender is OK.
Got 2 Stihl grinders about 20 years old in use 6 days a week, sounds like good service to me.
I have an 009 I have run since 1981. About 10 cord a year on it. And I consider it a bad saw.
By the way, I took in a Husky today that was run over by a skidder. There are no unbroken parts on it. Think I will keep it as an example of non warranty abuse.

fish & stihltech

Are you two about done sniffin each other's butts and pawin' the ground barkin'? :D

i'm knowingly sticking my neck out and laying it on the chopping block, but i'm with stihltech with this. i think fish is just set in his old ways. name one saw brand that doesn't make junk.
paul harvy said you can cut a 50' tree with ease using a 36 husky.
husky's logo was, built by professionals for professionals.
i think thay call it advertisement. not always the whole truth.
every manufacturer does it so lets give it a brake. ok fish.

Yep...you can lead a llama to water but you can't make it drink.....especially if the water smells a little fishy.....

I am sure the Stihl grinders last, but they have
no tilt for full chisel chain, and I want a 2 directional
motor. I think the 009 is a decent saw. I have had the pleasure of working on three 017s this week, I do not like them.

OK, I have an actual question for Stihltech here: What's your opinion of the 031/32 line? I have an old 032ave that I've grown to like. Some people say they're hard to work on, but I haven't had any problems.

(Just to keep this on topic, I have no love for Stihl's consumer line. If I want a short-on-quality saw, I'll buy an inexpensive one. If I want to spend a lot of money, I'll buy something decent like a Domar of Efco. Of course, I've never spent more than $50 for a saw...)

I am not Stihltech, but I like the 030/031/032, and think they are
fairly easy to work on. One of the best made saws out there.
