any ideas what model it is?

im thinking mid to late 80's, 50-60cc

other than that, no clue.

but its a runner and i might invest some time in it.

many thanks for any input

Not an expert on the Jred Saws, but it might be a 490 or 520. How many pennies did you give?

could make back the pennies i spent by selling the ragged out bar-chain on ebay(not that i would). the second hand/ebay market is strong in the uk (in that people will spend over the odds on any old crap).

It's not a 520

I have got a 520sp in fine runnin' order, and that ain't one. Kill switch, choke lever, and air filter cover screw are all wrong. I can't help you figure out what it IS, but I can help with what it ISN'T.

It looks like a 625, 630, or 670 series saw. Wipe of the crank case and look for a black tag with silverish writing.

Also
625 and 630 are 61.5cc's, 670 is 66.8 cc's. They are great little saws.

The tag should be here if it still has it.
