They certainly do vary mate. My brother has a Model 700 in .222 with a HS Precision stock, Timney trigger, and heavy fluted Kreiger barrel. Very very accurate but used mainly on the range. The only original part is the action though and that's been lapped etc.
However just like the cheaper Weatherbys the Remington 700's are highly overrated in my opinion. They may have been good many years ago but I'll take a newer Sako or Tikka over one anyday although the Sakos are getting hell expensive now. By the way I know a guy with an older Tikka .17 Rem and it's piece of crap but I love my Tikka. My best mate bought a Tikka T3 in .25/06 like me but in sporter weight - he reckons it's a nicer action and trigger than the Accuracy International sniper rifles he used in the army.
Good old Uncle Nick :D Still bragging about how good he is climbing mountains at 108 years of age or whatever he is :D He'll certainly be missed for his loading data though, that's for sure. For his experience he always made me laugh when saying the maximum range of a .22LR is 69m etc. I'd bet my lefty he's bowled rabbits arse over head well beyond that consistently with the old two two.

Yeah Mate,i think Remington rightly or wrongly made there name on the "three rings of steel"....remember that lol.I have heard guys complain about the extracter in them as well, just never had a problem with mine. The Tikkas are nice, love the smooth action and where always good value.just for some reason the Sako did nothing for me.
Actually meet Nick once, nice guy.But yeah im with you on the 22 thing, the day i cant down a bunny with the old Brno(with hold over) at 100 metres ill give it away! and im no markesman.

Yeah mate to rebarrel isn't cheap if you do it properly. I think my last Kreiger was $770 odd but the chambering and fitting added around $300. Sprinter Arms are cheap too compared to others.

The Finns know their rifles alright. I have a M39 that was built on a 1906 Tula Mosin Nagant action by Valmet. With military grade ammo (Czech) and open sights, it will put 5 rounds in an inch and a half.

Way more torque than a 260 mate but not as zippy. I'd rate the 260 still for quick limbing or in tree work - not the weight or balance but just the throttle response. I know there 261's that have been modded which have seen significant increases in throttle response but I'm talking stock here. However I sold that 261 I owned after I sold my little Dolmar 5100-S which was the worst saw decision of my life. If anybody was chasing a small quick saw I'd recommend a 241C M-Tronic ANY DAY OF THE WEEK over a 261 :D

I fixed it for you Randy. A lesser man "may" pull a 12" group at 50 yards.

I guess I should have added that I was shooting uphill in a wind storm.

That's more like it Randy. I knew it couldn't have been so easy. In fact what I heard is that onlookers thought you'd hit the target with the first shot then pulled the next 4 shots into the neighbouring tree line. They didn't realise they were all through the same hole.
