What to get him

ok All, this may be opening a can of worms, but could be interesting,

I have 9 year old son who has been working with me for some time(when not at school) out cutting firewood or milling and so on,
he is a good help knows his way around the saws and other equipment and knows when to stay out of the way, i have got him all the PPE i can get him for his age, chaps, full helmet with viser and ear muffs, work clothes good boots (have not found anyone that has steel caps for a 9 year old yet) Adult size 3 i think he is)
He has been bugging me for his own CS for some time now, i do not have any small CS, the smallest i have ever had was a Stihl 034 that my dad got me new for my birthday when i turned 13, i have not got it now anyway, he can use a CS ok, my dad has a 280 woodboss which he often has a go on, his cousin has offered him a 026 for free, i think he is doing ok for a 9 year old but but but! (his mother said NO No No!!!)
SO the big thing is should I get a 9 year old his own saw????? is he too young to be into this???? what saw??? (Stihl it will be most likley)
so tell me what you think, any one with kids got things you can tell me from your past knowledge, age, saw, PPE, OHS so on,

anyone can have their two bob's worth on this!!

with the proper instruction he is not to young IMHO, for the first 3 months i stood with both my sons and allso the first week at the start of cutting season so they could get the hang of it again after 7 months of the saw . my sons wear full wrap chaps helmet with muffs & visor and steelcap boots but you have to teach them about compression and spring tension on cutting and not over reaching the importance of a good and steady stance and not to take unnecessary chances any how thats my take on it i'm not one to wrap my kids in cotton wool theres to mutch of that going on these days . there will be more experienced cutters tham me chime in any time now with more and better advice , safe cutting and cheers

Kids minds don't work the same as adults do

Kids think differently..............Each Kid is different, you know yours best.

IMHO you will not forgive yourself if the kid gets hurt so OK let him do it but I reckon they should have direct supervision and for quite some time.

If you look at the statistics for work place accidents and the 15 to 21 age are so much higher than any other group. Same with cars
ETC.

my kids are
Girl 23.........yes I could teach her
Boy 20........this one needs to become a lawyer or a drug dealer because he cant fix anything and breaks stuff so fast he needs lots a money to pay someone else
Boy 10........scares me and scares himself but he is learning can do a oil change on family cars.
Girl 5...........Pick of the bunch shows more potential than the rest did at that age. Messy and takes stuff from the man cave I mean shed and forgets to put it back...........very independent and doesn't take any bovine manure from anyone.

I'd say 9 a wee young, but only you can tell for sure. My little bloke was about 11 but wise beyond his years when I put him behind a saw very carefull about it was I and so was he.

Thats a tough one.I never had to go through that, have a 21 year old daughter that had no interest.
As David said every kid is different and you know yours better then anyone. If it was me there would have to be total supervision, and in my case if Mother said no it would be NO :hmm3grin2orange:

Rambo uses a chainsaw! I got the feeling the way that thing kept bogging that my Chinese 365BB would have been a better choice, but maybe it was just Rambo's aggressive technique.

This ##### out here hopes he saves this video for when he is 60 (provided he makes it), so he can review what a jerk he was as a kid.

HOW MOSES GOT THE 10 COMMANDMENTS

God went to the Arabs and said, 'I have Commandments for you that will make your lives better.'

The Arabs asked, 'What are Commandments?' And the Lord said, 'They are rules for living.'

'Can you give us an example?'

'Thou shall not kill.'

'Not kill? We're not interested..'

So He went to the Blacks and said, 'I have Commandments.'

The Blacks wanted an example, and the Lord said, 'Honor thy Father and Mother.'

'Father? We don't know who our fathers are. We're not interested.'

Then He went to the Mexicans and said, 'I have Commandments.'

The Mexicans also wanted an example, and the Lord said 'Thou shall not steal.'

'Not steal? We're not interested.'

Then He went to the French and said, 'I have Commandments.'

The French too wanted an example and the Lord said, 'Thou shall not commit adultery.'

'Sacre bleu!!! Not commit adultery? We're not interested.'

Finally, He went to the Jews and said, 'I have Commandments..'

'Commandments?' They said, 'How much are they?'

'They're free.'

'We'll take 10.'
