I get a giggle out some of these miners Rick, allot had work at jobs like councils and such to get their tickets, once they got them they bolted for the mines, now they are crawling back begging to get their old jobs back, sorry boys, those jobs are already filled by people that wanted to stay and work.

Stihlman441,,,
Couldn't bring up that link, but it will make things interesting.

Another facebook pic, one comment said, possably a new worker Jeena got from over seas.

Oh dear.

That photo looks photoshopped but could be wrong.

Up these pats there are blokes getting laid off from the mines, boy are they crying, most of them miners have big flash houses, a few landcruisers and boat or two in the garage, without the big paying mine jobs they are stuffed. The mine and gas mobs have certainly had an impact on the local economy, not all for the good.

Me, I am happy driving a skidder and cutting a few trees, working for a good outfit, not mine wages but I am happy.

Cheers
Will

I agree mate. I have HEAPS of friends that have shot off to the mines with dreams of $100k+ a year. 90% were extremely disappointed. People hear of these sorts of wages and think that any moron can earn that amount. It is not the case unless you are trade qualified and after other expenses it isn't actually that appealing. I'm lucky with the job I do that I'm earning good money and have had job offers in the mines as an environmental officer etc but none exceeded $80k a year. Apart from the odd one most guys I know do not like working in the mines but have no other employment options. A mate of mine heard he could earn $100k a year washing dishes at Moomba. I spoke to a mate from Halliburton up that way who said he'd be lucky to earn $70k a year without expenses taken out.
For some reason when people talk mine wages $100k a year is the figure they instantly think of which is utter BS.

Been hearing the $100k figures also, from ones that don't work in the mines. The ones that I know that do work in mines they never seem happy, just worn out, never know when they are working, changing shifts all the time :msp_thumbdn:

A mate of mine was working as an OH&S officer with a New Guinean Gold mining company. Only a few months ago the darkies turned on him and beat the crap out of him (he gave a bit back) and only just made it to the chopper which the pilot had luckily started up - they only just made it out. It really shook him up and if the axes and machetes etc weren't locked up there is no doubt in his mind him and the white pilot would have been killed. $5000 a week all of a sudden didn't sound that good.
I'm with you, I don't know one mine worker that loves their job and it takes a big toll on families too.

yes i hear all the stories also, the job i want is on the big tractors, a race mate of ours does just that and he is chatting with his superiors but i do not intend to hold my breath waiting in hope, so self employment in the timber industry is where i am staying i guess. I should be thankfull, i lot of men dream of owning their own operation.

edit,,, Matt, i agree that pic does look a bit far fetched hey.

The mining jobs never really appealed to me, after all most engineers in mines spend their time time filing paper work. I wanted to get into the more nitty-gritty engineering stuff and preferably in the forestry industry.

And yes Neil, big tractors are fun! :msp_biggrin:

We are planning on building something with a V12 but more on that later :msp_wink:

hahaha, i do have 1 of those just a wee bit bigger. mine has a bucket and forks as well, ran out of warranty last year

I have one a bit smaller :) A 17hp Kubota with backhoe and bucket/forks. Hydrostatic drive. Little beast. Runs on the smell of an oily rag...

This is my own 4x4 when she was new, in my mill shed. where it is parked is where i stack my sawn through the day.

Little pisser Matt, that would be handy in its right place.

Very handy Neil. Can dig down to 2m and in low range is like a bloody bulldozer. Only downside is that it won't lift enough weight for my liking so I'm thinking of getting a new Case or New Holland with hydrostatic. I was at the Riverland Agricultural Field Days today and the 30-35HP models are going for a song in the low $20k's.

Working away from home is not for everyone of course. The turbine game is alot of fun though - more horsepower and precision than a mine anyday!

Chris.

I heard the new Kenwood Kitchen Whizz was getting an upgraded mixing attachment :)

Yes Matt - that is a 500MW upgrade right there.

Regards,

Chris.

Bloody hell. That would even give a semi ripe banana a damn good thrashing.

On a serious note, what sort of rpm's does that thing pull? Cool pic. I love big machinery :)

Have a look at yanmar's too, they are usually really well priced.
