Matt I think your Cutty Cutty Long Time chain could have a serious competitor now... introducing ebays latest laser sharpened chain!

NEW 20" Chainsaw Chain SAW Chain 76 D L 0 325 | eBay

Surprisingly affordable too :msp_mellow:

Don't be silly Rudy. I mean has he used a 6 megawatt laser for the sharpening and has he actually electroplated chrome on the cutters? He has probably just painted the raw steel finish silver.
My Cutty Cutty Long Time race chains haven't been selling real well though Rudy. I reckon bloody Neil cottoned onto my idea and is cutting my lunch somehow via the back door. Probably knew somebody at Customs and nabbed one of my shipments to steal all my secrets...

Granberg's "File n Joint" and files, help

Hi Guys
When I got my saw last august I also got a Granberg's "File n Joint" but when I put it on the bar and try to set the angle on top, there is play in it. Which means the file is moving, it a real pain
Any ideas on how to fix it
Also what sort of files are you all using
Was wondering if there is a diamond file out there as it would last longer than the std ones
Whats your thoughts on this
Regards Peter

The Granberg is generally better than the Oregon (Precision Tooling) copy.
Can you post a photo of where the play is ?
The Oregon version is ordinary as you need to re-adjust the file height side to side or you get two differing amounts of hook.

Personally, if I'm going to use a guide I prefer the Husky combi roller guide.
Quick, accurate and it holds the file at a good height on Oregon and Carlton chain for the right amount of hook (IMO)
The Vallorbe file holder is good too.

The Oregon (Precision) and Stihl file guides hold the file too high, again, just IMO.

The Carlton File-O-Plate was an excellent gizmo but it looks like it's gone the way of the Dodo since Blount bought Carlton.

I just use Vallorbe files as that's what my dealer supplies, and he's awesome.

(or so he keeps telling us ) :D

I've tried a few different file guides but I've gone back to using a basic file guide and raker depth gauge

IMO the easiest way to sharpen a chain...... just follow the angle and keep the file level, you can't go wrong...unless you have a dull file ;)

The only file that seems a little better than the rest is "Save Edge" but not worth the hassle and extra expense of importing them from the US,
Vallorbe files do just fine.

I really like to progressively lower my depth gauges/rakers as the tooth goes back.

If you don't you'll find the chain barely cutting when you have a little tooth and a lot of gullet, right where it should be at its fastest.

Is that the 359 Wayne, what cylinder did you end up using?

Do ya do a cutty cutty a really long time chain, not a fast time but a cutty cutty really really long time.

Yeah I've got my little Chinese brats onto it at the moment. It will be called "Cutty Cutty Carbide" but we're having a few difficulties in production. Little One Hung Lo and Some Wan Car have been trying to square file the carbide cutters and are on their 3rd pallet of double bevel files already. They are trying to tell me they have bad blisters on their hands and are hungry but that's just the sort of excuses these little buggars come up with to get out of work.

I already have ASIO on to my Cutty Cutty shipment disappearing. Apparently some short little nuggety pirate scaled the side of the cargo ship off the coast of NSW, picked up the 20' container and threw it over the side. Not pointing fingers Neil but jesus...

I think I can read what it says on the tie straps.

:msp_confused:

As if Rick. What was it written with? A needle? It wouldn't even fit. It's 3/8" chain old son, not bloody anchor chain.

I have been sharpening chains for more than 35 years and you sort of get the hang of it after a bit. I bought one of those filing jigs in about 1982 and it taught me the right angles. After that I have always just used the file without any guide.
Put your bar in a vice with the chain tensioned nicely and away you go. By the way, you only file forward and you clean your file often by tapping it or blowing it with compressed air. Drawing your file backwards will kill it right quick. A properly filed chain is as sharp as you can get. I have various bench grinders and I also use a foredom with stones when in a hurry but a file is all you need. I buy my files by the dozen and haven't noticed much difference in the different brands.
Persevere.

I have been using one of those Stihl fancy ones with the racker file at the same time and have found its easy to use and works well.

Yeh the 2 in 1's are awesome. Keeps the depth gauge in check every time you sharpen. I've got them for all the sizes of chain now. They don't do a .404 one nor do they work with skip chain but I've got the new Stihl FF1 in 3/8 for the skip chain and will get one for .404 too

STIHL Feilenhalterführung FF1 | STIHL | Stihl, Viking, Motorsäge, Kettensäge, Motorsense, Heckenscheren, Freischneider, Hochdruckreiniger, Rasenmäher, Rasentrimmer

I could be wrong Rudy but pretty sure Wayne would have been smart enough to use cylinder designed to fit a Husky 359.

Har Har...

Yeah they work good, I ended up getting the Pferd one which does both 3/8 and 404 (7/32 file). I wasn't sure if Stihl had one yet...

My bad, it's plain as day across three individual but consecutive tie straps, then repeats.

Oh, I am slow, it's three separate words isn't it ?.

CUTTY CUTTY SUCKS

Hmm, could this portent an ebay chain war ?

:D
