You're right Darren. There is a max range stipulated on skippies :(
I should have done a bit more reading as I just reread the copy of the permit I have here.
Good stuff with the Anschutz too. My brother has the same model as yours and he was around for tea tonight and saw your post. First thing he said was that the newer ones must have a different bolt knob!

I would have quoted you but it looks like the multi quote option has disappeared.

Nice shooting Matt, remember you mentioned drugs not me!!!!! .Dosent suprise me with the 700 shooting like that.I no they have had there critics lately, and maybe the newer ones have gone off the boil.Ive had mine since the mid 80s in .243 and if im good enough on the day it will shoot the groups your talking about all day long.Off the top of my head i can count around twenty other 700BDLs from the same era in various calibres that all shoot great and have never had a problem. There was one that shot like crap after a very rough floating and bedding job. The other centrefire i had that would stay with it was a Tikka M55 in .22/250.Actually come to think of it the only rifle in any calibre that i didnt like was a Sako .222, mainly the factory trigger gave me the craps.
Shows how long i have been out of it,just found out Pecar shut down around 08!!

Hey nothing wrong with the 700BDL actions. No doubt they can shoot but Remington have had some serious quality issues over the years and definitely over the last 20 years. The rifling in my 700BDL-DM's original barrel was that bad it was basically uncleanable. It would only shoot around 1 1/2" groups and that was bedded and floated with a trigger job too plus decent handloads.
I don't recall any guys who own older 700's complaining and I have even heard that Australia is getting Remington's "seconds" which actually seems to add up. The yanks love these things and you don't hear them complaining too often which makes me wonder why so many Australians have had issues with them. Go to any range and start listening to some of the more experienced guys and what they have to say about the Remingtons and their barrels and finish - it isn't good. At one of the local ranges I used to shoot at there were 3 guys who all bought the Remington 700's at the same time with the stainless varmint fluted barrels (Senderos?) in .300 Win Magnum and they all couldn't eject their first fired case. Turns out that all 3 (from the same batch) hadn't had the chambers honed properly (or something along those lines) and all 3 rifles had to be replaced. Then again Sako had a recall a while back on their stainless fluted .300 Winchester Magnums as well when a few barrels let go.
After I had issues with my first 700's barrel I had it borescoped and holy crap, it looked like the rifling had been cut in with a hammer and chisel. No wonder it was a bastard to clean.
After getting a Kreiger barrel fitted to my .22/250 and buying a Tikka T3 I've realised just how easy it is to clean well finished barrels :) My little CZ527 .222 is also a pleasure to clean as well.

On another note my brother and I went out this arvo after work and whacked some shots out of his Remington 700 Tactical in .338 Lapua. Lucky it has a muzzle brake (unlucky for my right eardrum!) but they are a serious calibre. We were sighting it in on an old fridge and one of the rounds went straight through the fridge's compressor (250gn Lapua Scenar projectiles) and then went straight through a hot water service behind the fridge. Serious penetration and a serious calibre. Also seriously loud and seriously expensive too. Once again for a $2700 rifle the fit and finish is crap - the barrel must be touching the stock somewhere as it has only fired 20 rounds and both myself and my brother were shooting about 3" groups at 100m and both groups were stringing up the target. There seems to be a distinct lack of "TACTICAL" going on unless the black stock, muzzle brake, and parkerised barrel defines the word Tactical. The yanks need to do a bit of work with the Europeans I reckon to get a few ideas. Some of the US custom gun makers are turning out really nice guns but I'm not convinced that their mainstream manufacturers (outside of the military gear) can build a decent rifle for sh*t. There is no consistency. One will be deadset accurate with a mirror like bore and the next one will pull 3" groups and take 5 hours to clean.

Even though my 700BDL-DM ended up accurate after a lot of work out of the box it was initially a POS. The chrome started to flake off the trigger sear after about 2,000 rounds so I had to polish that up with the Dremel (nice trigger now), the front end of the stock was warped so was hitting the side of the barrel, the barrel finish was absolute ratsh*t, and it never fed properly on it's 3rd and 4th round so I had to drop my thumb in through the open action and push the front of the case down so the bolt would pick up the rim and feed a round. I actually only fixed this problem last week after routering out the trigger guard/magazine well in the stock which raised the entire magazine up a few mm. Now it actually picks up the 3rd and 4th round. I wish I'd have worked this out when I bought it :(
It's on it's 3rd barrel now and the last two have been stainless Sprinters which are bloody cheap. The last one was $550 fitted. I can't even buy a Kreiger blank for that. Sprinter Arms (at Hahndorf, SA) also have a wall full of reamers with nearly every wildcat calibre you can imagine. Their internal finish isn't brilliant (he doesn't believe in lapping barrels in) so not the easiest barrels to clean but everybody raves about their accuracy.

I have to agee Matt ,their quality has slipped,i may have been lucky with my VSSF, but yeah the factory is letting guns out that shouldn't be fired let alone be sold to the public,IIRC both my brothers had to have the firing pin hole bushed as it was way to big for the pin,it was large enough to let the primer flow back into the hole giving the impression of some serious overloads, then there was the head spacing issues, the crown finnish was inconsistent and the trigger was wound that much ya nearly needed two fingers to release the sear, and to top it off one of my brothers was getting treated like dirt from our REM importer for bringing this to their attention,i think they made good with the head spacing issue, there way of fixing that was to swap the bolts till it went away onya Raytrade..............clowns

I see a pattern forming. I had the same issues with them as the gun dealer I bought my 700 from sold out to the government not long after I bought it so I had to go straight to the importers to complain. I had no joy from them at all. Some of these importers are deadset cowboys and I often wonder how the hell they ended up getting licensed. I'd also love to see their markup as they know full well we have no other option. It's not exactly like importing a chainsaw! The cost of reloading components is absolute BS at the moment as well. The difference we pay to guys in the US is huge. The thing with the Remingtons too is that they are not actually that cheap either! That's why I'll be going down the Tikka path from now on.

Dead right about reloading. I haven't loaded crackers for ages primers deer as poison powder seems to be virtually In posable to get here and pills are expensive and hard to get as well so I've been using Norma factory crackers in the 223 and shooting lots of rim fire the 7.62 is up on blocks and haven't had call to use the shotgun in ages but I don't reload for it

Components have gone through the roof but at the same time so has loaded ammo so it still pays to reload unless you value your time :)
As far as 12 guage reloading I recently bought a MEC Jnr press and it didn't take long to realise that with the price rise in components it was a stupid idea. When I was in Melbourne a few months ago Andrew (Stihlman) and I went into Ballantyne Ammunition who make Champion shotgun shells plus make their own shot. I bought 4kg of Vectan powder (enough for around 3,600 reloads) and 60kg of shot off them which was half the price of buying it up here. All of a sudden loading shotgun shells was cost effective again :)

I have to anyway its a trip to Sydney every time I need powder

Be careful where you buy your gear from in Sydney. I went to Horsey Park Gunshop when I was in NSW last year and bought over a grand worth of components and it was a dumb move. It cost me a sh*tload more than buying exactly the same stuff from the SARA store in Adelaide. Big name doesn't always mean good deals.

If buying a gun from interstate it has to be transferred via a dealer. They will take care of the transport too. If you are in Queensland and you want a new rifle then you're in the right state to start with for the best deals going around :)
