Thinking about adding a 660

I keep a 36" on my 660 at all times. I bring it out for the big stuff only, I have a fleet of smaller and lighter saws for the other work. Personally I like to work up big trees for firewood, if you have big fast cutting saws you can make a lot of wood in a hurry. You will also find that after you get the 660 with a big bar and the word gets out, the work will find you. Most guys don't have the equipment to handle the big stuff

Stihl lists 36" as the longest recommended bar for the 660. I've used my 36" on the mill, cutting stumps, and bucking on rare occasion. The 32" is more manageable.

I have a 30" for the PM1000 and I haven't found a spot that I've wanted a longer one yet. I hadn't considered a 32" for the 660, but that might make more sense than a 36"....then again, "making sense" is somewhat over rated. :msp_wink: Actually though, I do like that idea.

My muffler modded 660 likes an 8 pin rim even with the 36" bar except in really hard wood like hicory. With a 25" on it you can't bog it even with the 8 pin. Imo the saw drinks fuel like a thirsty camel but what do you expect with almost 8 HP and 92cc... I still haven't run a lighter or better balanced " big saw "

I have an MS660 story to tell, maybe on a new thread? (say?)

also will post a picture here of something I need the 660 veterans to help me with..
I' post it and flee since I really have to get the hack out of this office..

I think there's a missing grommet / seal between the oil pump outlet and the oiler hole that goes to the bar ....

Help? Anyone has a picture of it ready to reply with?

later..

Respect,

Jo.

Did you buy it? Do it for 600 isnt bad first time you get it in big stuff youll be so happy. See if he take 500 you can always try. If you don't like it i don't think you would lose money if you had to sell it

I always ask if they are firm and then offer half of what they say they'll take. You'd be shocked at how often they say yes.

Haven't been punched in the face yet.

I don't have it in hand yet, but it's a done deal for $600. I already beat him down from $650. And this is a buddy of mine, so I'm not going to haggle much. $600 is the right price. I'm out of town all week and will be picking it up first thing next week. I'll post some pics when I bring her home and get it in some wood. I just dropped about 8 cherry trees last week and I can't wait to get the saw (and those logs) on the mill.

Looks like you need # 1122 649 5000, sealing ring B4X2. Just did the higher volume oil pump change and remember that little seal because I blasted the saw with the air compressor and sent that seal to never, never land and had to order one.

It's almost H*LL to get it soon where I'm at now, so..

..so I did this: automobile fuel hose slice.

It works flawlessly!

But...
..will it endure the oil and not deform??

It's a fuel hose after all, it should sustain petroleum-based substances and last some time in there until I get the original.. say?

So I'm picking this saw up on Tuesday. Like I said, it will primarily be used for milling, but I will certainly want to have the option to buck the occasional big stuff. I'll have a 36" bar and I'm wondering if the MS660 can pull full comp in hardwood or do I need to go to a semi or full skip with a 36" bar. I'll probably stick with Rapid Micro for ease of sharpening.

do u mean..

.."Harvester" chain? RMHS?

I never understood why name a .404 chain a "Micro"..

Got a 32" 3/8" .063 full-skip combo on the way.. I still wanna get a shorter more affordable .404 combo to see how that baby goes.. haven't run a .404 yet..

I would leave the .404 chain for the torque monsters of years gone by and the ms880 and 3120xp, I am not saying that a ms660 won't pull it, I just don't think there will be any gains especially on bars over 28 inches.
