FIL said he had a tree down in his pasture..easy access. Well, thats debatable. The tree was down, however. I have no idea what it is.

Cut pretty fast, split very easy so im assuming it burns horrible. I dont think maple because of the seed pods, but im not a pro. Catalpa? Theres at least another load and half of smaller stuff on the ground.
 
Looks to me like maybe smooth sumac. They get pretty big around here in Md. Giant weed that you don't want around your house.

It looks like some sort of mimosa with those pods on it. They normally on grow to 40ft or so though. Maybe it's just a really really old one?
 
+1 for sumac and tree of heaven... fyi they are the same thing.
