Our Sumac only gets 4-5" in diameter and 10' tall up here. Have you checked Tulip Tree?

Definitely NOT Sumac. Sumac is more like a bush than a tree and makes an umbrella style canopy at about ten feet tall and has red fuzzy clustered seed bunches. The Natives used Sumac seeds to make a drink from.
It's a stumper for sure. I may say it looks like Kentucky Coffeetree. Redbud is another similar. Would be easy to determine if you had the leaf.

Looks like Hackberry to me

Not hackberry unless the ones in IA are different. The hackberry in IA have smaller raised pieces, "warts", on the bark. Seeds are brownish/purpleish balls that hang from a stem. No pods.
