What the heck is this???

Something fell out of my chainsaw when I was milling yesterday. It worked its way out towards the muffler. The saw is a 395XP. I did the best I could to get a good picture but my camera seems to want to focus on everything BUT the darn part I'm trying to photograph. Its a hard plastic piece. Has ridges on one side almost like its supposed to be pushed into a hole...kind of like you'd find in an automobile door or something. The inside of it is very clean and shiny...looks almost wet its so shiny.

I thought I'd ask before I started to open the thing up and look for where something is missing.

I do not claim to be a husky expert but Id guess its a carb heat exchanger plug for between the cylinder and the airbox

That looks something like a buffer plug. Check all over your saw and see if you find a open hole where that came from. Remove the bar and chain cover and look all over, where ever it came from there's a hole...

Hey good point. May well be just that. How it worked its way out the front of the saw is baffling but stranger things have happened...
 
I'm not seeing anything....

Can someone explain what a "carb heat exchanger plug for between the cylinder and the airbox" is? Picture? I'm not a mechanic at all...just a figure it out kind of guy. My only experience with a "heat exchanger" would have me think plastic would not be the material of choice. But you said plug so I'm ready to learn what the heck it is. I plan to take it into the shop anyway, but my guy won't be in until late Wednesday.

BTW, taking the muffler off was a blessing in disguise. Gasket needs to be replaced. Ya know I bought this from someone on this site used. He let me know he looked over everything...I may be getting in touch with him soon.
 
Don't own a Husky, but it resembles an anti-vibe bushing somewhat like those on my Stihl.

That was exactly my first guess. But aren't all of the springs connect by screws? This is only open on one side, so a screw wouldn't be able to go through it. Then again, it may not be for one of the springs, but go somewhere else to also help with anti-vib.

Would a clearer picture help?
 
Pull the air filter cover off, is there two sets of holes in it?

One that would let air come in straight off the cylinder, and the other slightly routed to allow fresh air intake?

One hole will allow the warm air to be pulled from the cylinder area in the winter, so the other hole is plugged.

The other hole will draw in cool outside air, so the plug would stop the warm air from being pulled in from the cylinder.
 
would vibration make it come loose? you would think it would stay in there tight with the ridges on it.

The only 'holes' I'm seeing is the main intake from the centrifuge and the hole going into the carb when I take the filter off. From your description it sounds like you're talking about something totally different though. Can you send me a picture of what you're talking about?
 
thats the plug from the airbox area, that blocks off warm air in the summer, (in the winter you remove it when the temps are very low, to let warm air in from the engine, into the air compartment.

I have the EXACT same plug on my Husky 61. Fits on the engine/air filter plastic cover, on the left side of the saw (in between the engine and the air filter.)

id post a detailed pic but i dont have a camera anymore.
 
There's a similar part on the 394. Keeps the carb from icing up when you're sawing in low temps. IT goes between the air filter and the engine; it allows air to bypass the "air injection" cowl from the flywheel. Keep it off until its over 40F. I used a piece of aluminum sheet to cover the hole, instead of buying a new piece. It was missing from mine when I bought it from the original owner. The sheet fits nicely in a little groove; you should be able to just pop that back in the hole.

I forgot to mention that on my 394, the actual hole that it would have covered was cut out with a utility knife or something. I think that the hole has to be cut out, and isn't removed before the saw is purchased. I'm not sure b/c the saw wasn't new when I got it.
