Had another order for fire wood a couple days ago. Guy has a little van and says he'll show up and load her with a half cord which he will gladly pay cash for. I told him I highly doubted he'd get that much wood in the van and offered to bring him 1/3 cord in my pickup. Now I think I kind of hurt his feelings and am wondering if I should have just let him have the van load for the price of 1/2 cord.

By the way, this seems to be a not unusual occurance for folks looking to buy wood.

Do ya all give them what they want or what they pay for?

I don't understand??? The guy wanted to buy and pick up a 1/2 cord and you wouldn't sell it to him?? Or, he wanted to FILL his van and pay for a 1/2 cord??

I would have gladly accepted his money and set aside the rest of his wood for when he comes back.

This is what I would have done, he would have made two trips, but he could still have his whole 1/2 cord.

I know that I can fit 3/4cord of rounds in my full size van, but less in my conversion full size van, however, a guy down the road has two dodge caravans from the early years and I'd wager he can fit the same 3/4cord in his vans that I can fit in mine. Now, whether the suspension can tolerate that load, and for how long is another matter altogether different.

I"d offer to make a deal with that kind of customer.

Isnt that weird, I had just the opposite happen a few weeks ago. A guy called and wanted a cord of wood, wanted to pick it up himself to save some bucks. Said he was borrowing a truck from his brother.
Showed up in a full size dump truck! Then wanted to know if I thought it would hold a full cord.
After we loaded the cord, a peek inside the box showed it was less than half full.I told him if he wanted, he could get two more cords in the truck.
His response?"Well, I hate to overload this truck, it belongs to my brother":jawdrop:
As pulled away, it was clear he had never driven a truck that big, and I seriously doubt he had CDL to be on the road with the thing.

the first rule of business for me is to give the customer what they want . right or wrong , they are always right . know what I mean?

I give them what they pay for. The way I figure it, it doesn't do me any good to take money for 1/2 cord and give someone less.

If a customer pays for 1/2 cord, then that whole 1/2 cord is theirs and I don't want any of their wood left on my property. Besides, there's no need for me to get a reputation of *shorting or otherwise taking advantage of customers* (even if their view of what a 1/2 cord really is leads them in that direction).

* NOTE: I'm certainly not saying that any of you are that way! I'm merely stating how I approach things when a customer doesn't appear to know what a cord (or 1/2 cord) is.

I have had many people show up for xxx and I jsut leave what wont fit in their car for another trip. My dishonest firewood people out there. You wont believe how many times I show up w a __________ face cord or what ever and people say how much of that is mine, i say all of it and they say wow thats more then I expected/got last year from xxx.

I would grab a six pack and watch him try and get the wood in the van.
I love standing outside home dopo and watching people try and load stuff
in cars or on top its great.
