What would you pay for this?

I wouldn't pay anything, because it literally has no commercial value -- pro mills won't accept urban logs because of the high risk of hitting embedded metal.

If the owner doesn't want to give it away, he can pay a tree service to dispose of it.

Just my 2 cents.

About $100 if I was going to mill it up for myself. But why do they have to leave tall stumps like that. Pisses me off.

If it was with 40 miles (roundtrip) i would give him the offer of getting it out of his yard.. Already gonna cost me $$ out of my pocket for fuel. And thats if i can back my pickup up to it to load it whole.. Not to mention release of liability for yard damages (just in case)

walnut

i agree with the fellas above: i'd pay nothing. as of right now, it has no value. the value comes from your (or my) labor to turn it into boards, and considering the time, work, and materials it takes to mill it i'd say he can either give it to you or pay for someone else to remove it. one thing you could do though is offer to give him some of the milled boards if he'll give it to you for free.
good luck, let us know how it goes.

This pile of metal came from one walnut [yard tree] log. I never hit any of it with the band, but spent a lot of time chopping into it with a hammer & 1" chisel. It did ruin quite a few boards.

The round thing is a 12 ga slug. I use an old Whites coinmaster, it's saved me a bunch of blades.

because a idiot cut it down--probably the owner, and thinks the tree is worth hundreds, uh huh. take it to a mill, mill it up, stack and dry, plane it down, then make something of it. then after you make it hed buy it for nothing, because you used the high value wood he sold you for a bargain!!!!!!!!!!!!! spastic people--id pay nothing, as stated by others--see the ring around the tree just below the top crotch--bet there was wire around it, so you only have value in the log below that ring--not much--

The funniest log story I have is one time I called on a Craigslist add for a 30" urban walnut with no price listed. I asked how much she wanted for it and she said she called the local woodworking store and they were selling walnut for $12.00 BF so she figured $6.00BF for the raw urban log was about right. Yes that is right she wanted to sell an urban log for $6.00 BF. I just laughed.

I would offer him to options,
1. I will haul it off.
2. I will mill it up for him at my normal rate and he can keep the wood to use or sell himself.
I would also remind him that log prices that you can find a listing for, include delivery to the mill, and what my hourly rate is.

I hate high stumps.
I had a tree trimmer leave a 3’ stump on a 30” sycamore that only had an 8’ log in it to begin with. What a waste.
