Why are flippy caps hated?

I will be the odd Duck here, I like it when they came out with them I don't like using a screw driver everytime I fuel it up.unlike the old Homelite's you don't need a tool. I like the setup on the 031 AV why dont they make them like that anymore.

I had my first flippy cap incident a few days ago........got oil all down my leg.......that sorta sucked.

Flippy caps are pretty good imo...i have had two incidents over the last 10 or so years since they've been out, but not a huge deal.

I've also had exactly two incidents with my crossbred 044 because I only under hand tightened the non flippy oil cap. I wish it wasn't a crossbreed and I had flippy caps on both sides ;).

Thats my only fault with the Stihl screw-in caps. They either get too tight, or not tight enough. Seems you always have to loosen them with a scrench.

I love the Husky and Dolmar caps. They are just easier to grip and open. I've never had to put a scrench to my xpw.

If Stihl had'nt gone away from the old style caps I would have been happy. I love the old caps like on the 075. They are the easiest caps to open of any saw I have.

The flippy caps can and will wear out eventually, but I've only wore out one since I've used saws with them. That was on my 260. Got a new cap and it's been good ever since. I've also had worn out and broken screw-in caps.

Let's see...

In owning and running chain saws for 35 years with screw style caps, including some old Poulans etc.

No of screw caps that failed -0-
No of times that I ran oil/gas down my leg -0-
No of times I have been frustrated trying to get the cap back on properly -0-

In owning flippy caps for 8 years.

No of broken flippy caps -3-
No of times I have spilled gas/oil down my leg -3 to 5-
No of times I have been frustrated trying to get the caps back on correctly -numerous-

No of new saws I have bought after being frustrated by Flippys.

Non flippy cap saws -9-
Flippy cap saws -1-

I don't hate the flippy caps, but aren't really fond of them either. Another solution to a non-existent problem! :msp_rolleyes:

It is a total non-issue regarding which saws I buy, or not.

I like the not having to use the screw driver to open the caps too. I think most problems are from lack of patience. Just my 2cents worth

Sounds like a bunch of nurses in here with all the pissing and moaning.

6 years of flippy caps here, not a problem.

I don't give a flippy what ya think of my opinion but the design of the flippy is as flawed as the saws they fit on imo. It is not just the flippy that I can't stand, its poor filtration , inferior ergonomics. It is the combo choke bs switch there is just too many things that made it past quality control for me to ever buy another. I'm still angry over the over rated ms 200 t that did not last 3 months from new so durability is the final straw.

One most be smarter than the "FLIPPY CAP" (Another of my fav quotes) :jester:

You can complain about the combo choke bs switch all you want. I feel the same way about the primer bulb on them huskys

Dang Rope, you been complaining about that old 200T for years now. Ever thought it could have been a fluke? :msp_biggrin:

I think you need to run a 441C.

BTW: How ya been ole bud?

if you can't make a 200t last more than 3 months, you are definately not smarter than a flippy cap. in fact you may want to look into a whole new line of work/hobby..........:potstir::potstir::potstir:

You definitely have to be careful with the flippy caps, and outside of their just breaking, if you double check when you put them on, you can avoid the oil / premix pouring out of the tank.

I have not read all of this thread, so if it's been discussed, I've likely missed it, but I have a question. A number of posters have indicated they like not needing a scrench to open the fuel / oil caps. I guess I'm wondering if we don't all have a scrench within reach when we gas up. I always either adjust or replace my chain at every stop for fuel, so I've always got a scrench within reach. Not needing one for the fuel / oil caps does not seem like much of an advantage.

What am I missing here?
