here's the crappy chinese (I assume) bar and chain. don't see any markings on the bar, unless they're under the thick layer of lumpy paint. looks like a monkey painted it.

Yeah thats tri-link Chinese chain ,absolutely garbage. Ive had 3 of them break in the park service and told my guys not to buy them. It's labeled under many brands including Tractor supply.

Use the cylinder. Find a new piston. Check for vacuum or pressure leak. The crank seal under the flywheel is the usual culprit. Replace any suspect hoses and rubber parts. Inlet lever in carburetor set correctly.
Of course, no play in bearings.
thanks. the crank is in wonderful condition .

on the parts saw the crank is very hard to move. I may split those cases and check out the bearings just for sport.

I have a 25 on the 441 and a 24 on the SP70. was thinking of somewhat longer for the 044. manual says the 044 can take up to 36 but that sounds like a stretch and I don't want a 36. 28, 30 or 32. mostly oak here.

Ive run a 28 on mine, and it would probably be just fine with a skip tooth.
Like you said, I cut alot of different trees and a hard oak or Hickory isn't that forgiving.

The biggest item to give me grief with the 1128 saws used is always the clutch. The springs are usually wiped out or have groves in them or the clutch shoes.
The aligning tabs of the newee style clutch are often shattered and the old style are worn out.
I have used 066 springs in old clutches if a grove is worn in the shoe where the spring hooks in, they are a shorter spring.

China has no business getting involved in our small engines. Everything they produce is CRAP. If those of us in the USA and Canada buy this Chinese crap, there's no reason to complain. The decision has been made. Live with it.
