I can't see any reason not to buy it if it is available. There is a groove there for it.
But, looking at it you should be able to determine if anything will get past the filter without it.
Keep in mind saw dust is not particularly abrasive, lot of old saws just used a screen and worked fine like forever.
Just don't try it with a cut off saw.

IPL shows a rubber gasket on the air filter base. not sure why as the filters come with rubber gaskets on them. my filter base does not have the gasket. is this a problem? thanks.

There was a filter without a rubber mounting flange, then the HD2 came out with the gasket.
You don't need it on the air box . Preference of air filter , most use the wire mesh but as long as your prefilter is clean I really don't notice a difference..
The thinner filter might work better without the gasket.

finally got back on this today as my P41 and CS290EVL projects are finished up. I had set the coil air gap with a .030 business card which works with a lot of older saws. when it wouldn't fire, I folded a piece of legal pad paper in half (.016), used that to set the gap and it started. read later that the Stihl air gap setting tool is .200 mm so reset to that.

next weird issue. when pulling the starter, it feels jammed up. not just hard to pull but it feels like its jamming. when I take the starter off, I can turn the flywheel by hand. of course, by hand it gets tight when it comes up on compression, but I can turn it thru by hand. with the spark plug out I can turn it by hand like butter. when I put the starter back on the saw it is almost impossible to start.

think I resolved that.. 044 on the right. both were like that. left is one of the pawls I stole from my MS441 parts saw.

right one is from the 044 I'm re-doing. left one is from the 044 parts saw. left one looks like it spent a lot of time out behind a barn.
rt one appears to have limiters. left one appears not to have them but is such a mess.
