when its done by an dedicated saw improver.. with the proper know how u will get increased power.. sometimes a boat load.. my efforts are in the cutting part of the saw as i realise the other end is just too far outa my league. hense some ofmy recent post about opening one up..
my surest proof is the 372 pp i got from dan.. i had an chance to compare it with several stock 372 saws.. i dont know where the difference is coming from ,,but i definitely have a better cutting and running ugly 372 than the ones here that are a lot cleaner looking.. its the one saw i wouldnt swap sell or even show it working,, to just anyone. thats what i think of it..i do understand u thinking tho yukon..and i guess its really a matter of where u want to put your efforts..

Trendy? Trendy for whom? I do it because I think a machine like a chainsaw should perform at a certain level. The same way I think my ice auger should perform, it isn't stock either. It isn't so much for me about being "trendy" as it is me appreciating a machine that does its job correctly.
The only person I know outside of the forum who shares these "trendy" feelings with me is my Father. When we go out to cut, we want machines that are easy to start, reliable, and not underpowered. Getting the job done, and done safely is tops to us, much safer and faster to run the modded saws in my book.
I also enjoy the maintenance end, always put it away sharp, and clean. Just a weekend woodchuck trendy guys' take.

JJ, that's kinda the impression I got. With all the testimonials on the site about the added performance of the "hopped up" saws, why not do it if you have the "extra" cash. I'm sure the saw does run a little better, cooler and cuts a little faster. But do we all need that? From what I've read over the last few years about saw mods. It seems most of the gains are in a simple muffler job. I've done mine and I'm glad I did.
I've never run a fully woods modified saw...maybe if I have my opinion would be different. For now a saw with a good muffler job is all I need.
Hopefully I haven't ruffled anyones feathers....I'm just putting in my 2 cents.

Slow 7900s

Eric
Yes the 6401/7900 goes ringy a dingy.
I put some time on the saw today, its still hungry. It has one heck of an apatite, I keep feeding it but it still wants more fuel and chain.
I also left the muffler stock so you can see that all of the gains come from that alone.
You better get out your Nitro, cause this thing is going to eat your 372.
That's a fact Jack!

Dan, given the displacement advantage it ought to be able to eat the 372. Let`s see some video.

id rather talk to one man who can actually spit out what he really thinks... than 10 who play the politically correct game. course u never gonna get elected that way:)

Slow 7900

Russ
You didn't disappoint me. I was sure that you would bring that one up.
To make things a little more even. I just finished up a saw for mryb. That is a 2171 that is now 75cc. The slow 7900 will still rule. They don't take to porting very well.
Eric did say that he will take some videos when he gets the saw.
He also has a slow 372 that he will compare it with.
Now all that we need is some that peanut butter wood. All that we have is the real thing.

Peanut butter wood? You guys are the only ones who have real wood? Did I run one of your newly built 346s in my peanut butter wood? I guess that I should be covered in peanut butter, huh?

I`d like to compare 372s, even my 372 against your 7900s, only thing is that you guys have your little get togethers in secret locations at secret times. Since I am gainfully employed I can`t drop everything at a moments notice to sneak up on you guys.

Dan, you may have the fastest saws ever seen, I don`t know, but what I do know is that you have a chip on your shoulder that prevents you from playing well.

Yukon and ClearH20Scott- my only deal with hopped-up saws is this: Ok, I can average 10mmbf/day currently in the small timber I'm falling. I'm running a Stihl 440 that I've put a lot of time and energy into with modifications. These modifications do allow the saw to run and cut faster, however I can only make facecuts so fast, I can can only run from the stump so fast, I still have to measure out every log with my Spencer tape before I lop it off, I still have to find my footing when I'm cutting on steep ground, I still have to stop and gas up the saw every 25 minutes or so ( used to be 45-50 minutes with my "stock" saw ).

Now, All the time and research I put into this modified saw I consider a good investment, because I learned a lot. However, it didn't buy me much as a pro timber faller. My body can only go so fast, My two hands can only do so much at one time. My chain still has to be razor sharp at all times, and as Gypo Logger mentioned, it's the chain that's doing the cutting.

Modified saws are a lot of fun, and don't get me wrong, I like running mine. However, I think there's a lot mental horsepower that goes into it as well.

Russ- I don't think Dan has a chip on his shoulder as far anything goes, everything that I've heard from Dan has turned out to be the real deal, and if he says that Dolmar 7900 will keep pace with my Homelite Super XL, I have no choice but to believe him.

Much of the descision to leave my 7900 stock comes down to this: Some people are hung up on getting the most out of anything that is possible, I am not one of these people. I can be happy with "enough" I don't always have to have "more" . It's not so much "How much can you get?" but "How much do you need" On the other hand, if there is a saw that is "choked" from the factory and a little massage will help it live longer, then I'm all for it, I do not beleive the 7900 falls into this catagory.

I had a nice conversation with Dan this afternoon. We talked about many things, one of them being things that he says on here that made me believe that he was put out by some of the things I`ve said. He told me that for the most part he is just ball breaking. With that thought in mind, I`m sorry that I made the remark about the chip because I was serious. I still have questions about how the 7900 typically mods but Dan with the help of Woodsjunkie is going to show me. Dan was very gentlemanly and a pleasure to talk with.

BTW, I put in an order for one of his super 346s today, looking forward to trying it out.

Russ

Sorry Russ but you will have to take a back seat for now since Dan is working on 4 saws of mine right now. The jokes on you Jokers.
