So, how exactly does porting a muffler harm the chainsaw..................

Could harm the saw. 2-stroke engines use a scavenging system that requires back pressure, that the muffler provides.

Of course all the experts here will give testimony that if you do anything that makes more noise, then that is more power, and that is ALL good. To that I don't agree, but what do I know. I'm not an expert, like everybody here is.

i drilled some small holes in the muff cover so i am CERTAIN that they will say = PROBLEM
Yes they will .
Now i am really considering, and this is no joke, buying a New MS400c for myself(no adult kids allowed) and swapping out the coil to see if that is the issue.

oh the insanity
oh the pleasure
one more New Saw
that is the MEASURE

Alert - Alert = MAJOR DILEMMA

Now the DILEMMA that 'you pros' created.......

You know the caricature of the little devil on your left shoulder whispering in your ear......this is factual by the way.

Well, that little devil was whispering "just buy a New MS400c" to which one of his helpers said to me DO IT - DO IT
i almost gave in to the temptation with it's enticing motivated speech
but THEN, to save the day, (God had mercy on me) the little Angel on my Right shoulder said to me:

"Now David, do not give in to that temptaion for you full well know where it leads = 66.6 cc of disappointment."

the next thing the Angel said to me was:

"Remember David, the anointed and chosen saw for you is the MS462"

Upon which i rebuked that devilish 66.6 saw and made up my mind that the 7th Saw is 70cc = that's a Given!!!

Wouldn't ya know it, that little devil protested saying "it's 72.2 cc and HEAVIER - you will SUFFER"

To which i replied - Better to suffer with the Right Saw then a lightweight lefty whom Echo makes a mockery!!!

Peace to all who know that, 'New or used, we will not be abused by a saw which is going out-the-door'

Thays why you don't do stuff like that to the factory parts... bark box, or any other muffler half is the way to go.

That's flat out bs. The scavenging system does not need back pressure at all to work. What your trying to talk about is a pressure wave generated by tuned exhaust that forced fresh air and fuel mix back into the combustion chamber, that escaped into the exhaust. Canister exhaust doesn't do this. There's little to no pulse going on Inside of it. All back pressure does is make the exchange of exhaust and fresh fuel/air harder to exchange and can even keep some of the previous exhaust gases trapped in the combustion chamber, further reducing power.
