Hello all, just joined been lurking for a month or so, love the site it’s rare to find a site with so many knowledgeable, wise and civil people.
I just whacked up a couple of downed trees on a buddies property and want to get confirmation on species just for curiosity sake. I believe the wood to be sweet/black birch the trees were about 50’ when standing and the wood smells like wintergreen Skoal.
The trees fell about 18 months ago so no leaves were available. Here are some (poor) pictures of the wood, what do you think?
Thanks

First off; Welcome to AS.

2nd off; Looks like birch to me.

3rd off; Sounds like sweet birch. Actually quite delicious to chew on a small budded twig.

3rd off; Don't believe any of my tree ID posts. I'm about 2 out of 28 so far. But hope to improve in the next 30 years!

Its amazing how sweet the fragrence is from this wood. Its very aromatic. I was splitting a bunch of this the other day, and couldn't place the aroma but I think you're right about the wintergreen.

Welcome to another Pennsylvanian!

Hi there and welcome to the forums. Yes, you have Black Birch there-around here me and my other wood buddies also call it "Cherry Birch". It's excellent fuelwood with a great aroma. I like to use some of it for kindling because it lights up easy and doesn't smoke much. Enjoy!
