I'm thinking so too...our regional rep warned us to check RPMs on ALL PS-5100's before we sell them...that being said I have yet to see one that was running dangerously lean.

The closest dealer to me is 60 miles away so I bought my 5100 online. I admit Im not very experienced at tuning carbs- just know what I read here and in the old dirt bike mags. You say the rep's warned to check the rpm's, so what are you setting them at? I tuned my saw to 14,200 back in Sep, so I suppose I need to check it again now that its colder.

I read to tune the carb by ear and by tach, but wouldn't the ultimate check be a plug reading? I did that, I cut into a log a few times then shut it off fast and looked at the plug. It looked a nice even tan, so maybe Im not lean. What's the best way to setup and run a plug reading test. I don't know if I put my saw through the "wringer" enough before I looked at the plug.

rbtree Where are you? I would just like to hear what he's got to say about the 5100. I see him on Youtube with his piped saw running the snot out of it. . Rbtree what's the rpm on your saw? How's it holding up? Do you think the air filters doing its job? Of course I want to get more hours out of my saw than he probably does, but if he's not spinning bearings or burning em up then they must be pretty good!

Wow I don't know what to say or do. I bought my 5100 from a guy that ran straight gas threw it. I cleaned the cylinder with acid and threw a new OEM piston back in and its ran fine so far. I also installed the metal ring in the carb that prevents air leaks. Now I don't know weather to sell it or keep it. I richened it up after I installed the new piston and liked the performance so much I decided to leave it alone. It has maybe 3 gallons of fuel threw the new piston. And to think all the people I've been bragging to about how well the 5100s reputation is top notch.

I haven't been on AS in a while so forgive me if I'm a little late to find out about these problems.

I've run about two gallons through my 5100S since I got it back from the dealer with a new piston & jug - so far, so good and I'm still very happy with the saw.

Closer inspection revealed that the dealer removed the limiter tabs to be able to tune the saw richer than he did the first time around. It was running at 14430 rpm and the plug was dark brown. To be on the safe side, I enriched it another quarter turn, which brought the max-no-load down to around 14200 RPM - still makes short shrift of the firewood bucking I'm doing at the moment, especially after switching to an LP chain.

I think the word is pretty much out that these saws are fine as long as you run them quite a bit richer than the EPA likes, and I believe we'll be seeing few complaints from people who've tuned them accordingly.

Should be getting my 5100 back sometime this coming week.

Dealer replaced the piston, said it was running lean and caused it to score.

I think I will be taking advice from the board, getting a tach and setting the H screw back to around 14,000 rpm or so.

1. getting in touch with the dealer, took about 2 weeks
2. I had a 3 day trip to NM shortly after posting
3. I guess the dealer was very busy, it took him some time to look at it, and then it took longer to get a piston from Dolmar.

Yeah, 1 1/2 months is a bit of a wait.
It's time to acquire CAD and have a backup, or 3, saw.

Or finding a brand or dealer that doesn't leave you hanging like that. Yeah, I know. There's just way too many stories like this surounding Dolmar saws or dealers. I think the saws are fine, it's just the pathetic lack of dealer/distributor support.

You could say the same for Stihl around here either a dealer thats never open or one that has nothing in stock parts wise and only does parts orders once a month.

Dayummm Scott sounds like your the only good Dolmar dealer in the entire country, good thing Stihl can have a few bad apples and still have tons of good dealers huh,:hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange::hmm3grin2orange:

I guess that depends on your location, i have great Dolmar dealer support in my area, the stihl dealers here don't carry much unless your wanting a small homeowner saw,TSC has husqvarne but the biggest saw the carry is a 455.

I can vouch for my Dolmar/Husky dealer who dropped Stihl when they insisted they carry their full line, including their low end saws which the dealer considered substandard.Ron

I gave the 5100 a shot based off reviews and price and they didn't hold up. I'm not brainwashed and am willing to try new and different brands. This is first hand field testing and if you do a search on this model many of them have failed and not just under comercial use, usually the weekend woodcutters are having failure as well. I ran a 7900 and was impressed but no way would I trade the proven performance and reliability of say my 460 for the johny come lately of the saw world. To each his own I just will never own one again.
Since Dolmar invented the gasoline powered chain saw, they are not quite Johnny Come Lately:)

Well, I finally got the Dolmar 5100 back 2 weeks ago. The dealer first didn't get all the parts, then misplaced the gaskets, then had a wedding to go to, etc....

However, now the off-run-choke lever does not work correctly.
It will choke to start in the morning, and moves to run and runs fine.
But....
In the off position the saw will not turn off.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Other than taking it back to the dealer, basically I don't want to be without the saw again for a couple of months.

Thanks

Might take the top cover off and look and see if the wire is even plugged to the switch.
Yeah you need a new dealer.. Yours sucks..

Took the top off, got the lever to work right.
It feels a little funky, like there is too much play, or range of motion in it. But it works now.
3 1/2 - 4 months to get the saw back.

Now: Use the heck out of it making firewood for next winter. Yeehaw:greenchainsaw:

Please don't ever sell me a saw.:greenchainsaw:

I second that. I overheard a dealer not my own say that he sent out an ms 170 that was turning 17'000 out of the box and how it was the best running 170 he had ever seen. I bet it was for an hour or so. My dealer knows that when I get a saw it had dam well better be tached because he ordered me in a tach to check him. If nothing else he makes them to rich based off the tach instead of listening to the saw.
