after a long and careful search I was able to find another examples of hackishness, two actually, I was quite surprised, it can take years to have a multiple sighting day....

Ok all jokes a side would you guys top that if it had Bronze Birch Borer and that tree was planted by a dead family member and they wanted to keep it till it was dead!
I have thought about this issue lots and all though I have never been asked to do it , I allways wonder if that Butcher is really a arborist with a heart!

Yes John. I DO top trees when the top is dead. I'm not likely to leave one in the state that Paul's picture shows-I try for reduction cuts to decent laterals if at all possible. I topped a Norway Maple last week-got it back to fairly healthy wood, left plenty of leaf bearing wood and it looks like a tree(though not a beautiful one at present). The other 5 Norways on the other side of the property weren't so bad and just got interior deadwooded and clearance pruning. (Dieback appeared to be drought related)

just for the record, we seem to be getting slammed by bronze birch borer hereabouts. tops of birch are getting killed quick. I will be working at a job a couple doors down (I was doing the quote the first visit) on Thursday by the soudn of it, I will see if they finished up after lunch. :)
