I stayed out in the garage tonight until 11 pm to find out really what was the problem with this saw and I think now I've found out. According to Acres site a 7/16 came out on this saw and I just happened to have a piece of that and threw it on and of course it got in a bind when I tightened it down. I then took the chain guides off and tried again and the chain goes around just fine. I tried bending the guides out of the way of the chain but didn't do too good a job, they still rubbed on the chain so I decided to run it without the guides and running the chain a little more snug so it won't slip off. I may run it tomorrow when I get done mowing the yard and see if the chain will stay on. If it won't I guess I'll try bending the guides some more.

Here's a pic of the saw I've been talking about. I put a new oil line on it this morning because the plastic one was too close to the cylinder and got fried and of course the previous owner had some electrical tape he wanted to waste.

That sounds like what happens when someone attempts to run an XL-mount bar (D096/D196) on a large frame homelite. The slot is the same, and the adjuster holes sometimes work (or work with a little modification to the bar hole or adjuster nut)..............but the tail profile is smaller. Be careful. If the chain was dragging on the plates, then it could dig into the drivecase now that the plates are gone. Run it a tad, then pull everything off and look for fresh marks on the drivecase or clutch cover. Also make sure the chain's getting oiled. A bar with a narrower tail profile can leave part of the oiler slot on the drivecase uncovered.

Does the 330 have mechanical oil pump?

I just started this one up that I got and it runs good but not seeing much oil. I have yet to see if there actually is any in the tank though. THings smokes pretty good but has not been run in years.

Early/Late prod. XL-101's.

Early production used a three screw magneto backplate with a 1 15/16" spigot on the cylinder. Later changed to five screws because of reliability issues and a 2" spigot on the cylinder.

The three screw on the left had been repaired/glued together with JB weld.

No, I can't begin to get the screws or backplate to budge. (I blew a hole in the crankcase with a rod bolt.)

JB weld holds rather well.

I assumed this is the original Homelite bar for this saw, it's kinda big on the end like the old-timey saws were and takes a somewhat longer chain for that length of bar. I kinda thought the guide plates were the wrong ones since the inside one doesn't cover the bottom hole correctly, the hole in it is shaped differently than the one on the bar mount. The plates also seem awfully scratch free for a saw that's 50 years old. I have had 10 year old saws with the plates practically worn through. Anyway, this saw is gonna be mostly for display but I would like to show people that it will still run. It won't be used for felling any more trees.
I have a couple of the small mount Homelite bars and some large ones. This one is the larger mount bar.
This version doesn't have a clutch cover, the clutch is out in the open. Just a little shield next to it.

Says 900D on the tag, the switch is in the lower mounting hole like the 990/995 and the handle is broken.

Should be a good parts saw if nothing else.

Nice score Watson,

Resurrect the big Homelite - try not to part her out. All of these big units deserve a second chance, and that particular saw looks like it is mostly complete. How bad is the handle? Interesting to see that it is a 900D (by the tag) yet it has its kill switch located down below as you mentioned.
I guess as these improvements came along, older saws were changed to suit.

A nice big bore Homelite - hope to see photo's or video of it running some day.

Good luck with it.

Regards,

Chris.

Is a 28" bar too much for a Super xl auto, 58cc? It has the dawgs on it, so that makes it a 26"?

Is it possible to milk more power from the ol' girl?

It seems a little much to me. I run a 20 on my two but I wouldn't want much more. Never seen one of these souped up. Easier just to trade for a bigger saw.

Xl 903

Hi guys does anyone know the part numbers for the rings and piston for a XL 903??
And where to possibly get a set?

Picked up this super 1050 auto back a couple of months ago, hadnt been used for 15years, just sitting in a shed after the original owner had passed away, nothing really needed doin to it, just a carb rebuild and fuel line replaced, chain sprocket and bar were near new, felt a little bad taking it off his hands for $20.
My new fave saw.

Justin
