Well i have time on my hands due to being laid off in May so i went through all of my Homelites and they are all running except two parts saws. The XL12 (blue) had the bolts back out and lock the flywheel,

Super XL Blue
Super XL Red
Super XL Red (parts saw)
XL12 Blue
XL12 Red
XL12 Blue (parts saw)
Super 2
XL Auto

i will have to get a picture soon.

I nave a grand total of two homies. A red xl-12 and a 600- d the xl 12 I put a piston and ring along with a carb kit. The 600-d I just got last weekend. It only seems to be missing the cylinder cover. Is that part unobtanium? Pics to follow

7 digit serial numbered homelites?

Any of you homelite fans know how to read the old 7 digit serial numbers? I have a blue and white super xl automatic I just got today and the # is 2756502 any one know what year this ol girl was made?

Homelite Saw

I am new to this site but have looked from time to time for useful information. I've been felling trees for firewood for about 30 years and am still using some of my first saw. My collection includes:

Homelite,
3 XL87 Red, Green, White (1 has a miss stamp on the data plate "XL87")
2 SXL12 Blue,White
2 SXL12 Red
1XL12 Red

Misc plastic saw,
1 Sthil MS290
1 Husky 455 Rancher
3 Mac10

And spare part saws for the Homelites.

Definitely the Homelites get get the most use and the Sthil and Husky sit on the side while the Mac 10's rarely see any action.

i asked this before but think my question got lost in a flurry of ongoing bs (not that any of yall ever bs). so here goes.

regarding the automatic oil pump on a sxlao - i know the worm gear that drives the oil pump fits on the crank shaft. what i don't know is how does the crank drive the worm gear since there are no splined (or otherwise) connections between the two. i've got a suspicion but would like to hear from others on this. anyone know?

Here is my homelite super ez auto. Got it not knowing what I was getting as a cheap saw to take camping. Now that I know she is 40 yrs old and worth something I am going to have to buy another saw to have a camp sa so that will only make 4 saw that I will have. I keep telling my wife that 4 or 5 saws is not that many but she just gives me a dirty look an mumbles bad words about chainsaws ;)View attachment 298623View attachment 298624

For the life of me.... I can't figure out what she could come up with about chainsaws being bad......

I asked the same question a while ago Jerry. Aaron said that one the clutch is tightened it bears against the gear and jams it so it is locked in place on the crankshaft. It's a way more clever than the ones that are a press fit. As usual, he was right!

thanks tim, i was kinda thinkin that. just needed some confirmation. now i can quit thinkin bout it

here's an xl-12. This i put a new piston and rings on and a carb kit about a year ago and have never even bought a bar or chain for it. i just used the one off my brothers super xl to get it tuned in and haven't really cut with it yet man who knew that the bar and chain could be more than ya have tied up in a whole saw?

here they all are together
not bad for only three homies, right? i hope to put the zip to wood sometime this year, if i get time.

thanks for letting me share,
Nick.

White death

just got the zip today. looks to be all there good compression the p&c look great. air filter looks clean, heck even the chain wasn't rusted together. The guy said it had been sitting for a long time. it has a little of the white death on the gas tank. but other than that it looks clean for a fifty year old saw. I guess this is my first saw with the white corrosion on it, it looks minor but, how best do I treat it? Do I just sand it down or do I need to neutralize it with something?
Ps, sorry to quote myself but I have a hard time doing anything that has to do with pictures on this I pad and I am too lazy to go to the other computer:jester:

Sand/scrub it off with scotchbrite pads or sandpaper and light oil. I use a 3/1 mixture of Kerosene and ATF. The oil protects the newly exposed magnesium from more oxidization. If you plan on repainting the mag, sand/scrub with dry pads/paper, flush with stripper and then prime immediately. Otherwise, the freshly exposed mag will start corroding again.

Don't use steel brushes or pads/sandpaper that has been used on steel. You can embed steel/iron oxide in the magnesium, and that will continue the corrosion.

Thanks for the info, I won't be repainting it any time soon. That will be a whole other learning experience, I am still figuring out the mechanics of things. But, the collection is growing.
