I saw it on Ebay/Craigslist

The listing calls it a 039 but it's got a 029 engine. Thats misleading but not really a problem for the saw (just the buyer).
The real problem is that he seems to have mixed case halves. Clutch side is old numbers 029/039, but the flywheel side has the flippy cap which makes it ms290/390. Mixing case halves= bad news. Leak mucho.

Its a clamshell, no case halves to be mixed, right?

chain saw homelite super xl 57cc engine 20" bar

So I went, and looked at this saw...............suffice it to say the pictures do it way to much justice.
It's a very poor repaint with chips, and burrs painted over, paint drips on the cylinder fins, overspray on the muffler. The seller said it was original paint.........?:dizzy:
The guy asked me if I knew how to start it, I said I sure do, and he told me he'd put some more fuel in it because there wasn't enough in it (yeah he left fuel in it since he got it a few months ago). It fired up after about 10 pulls, but would sputter when I pushed the choke in. So I fired it up again, and ran it at half choke, pushed it in, and it died.
The seller started it, and started messing with it when I noticed that the muffler bolts were different( a hex head, and a phillips head machine screw)? Then I noticed the muffler cover was cracked at both places, and the +head was spinning CW and then CCW.
I pointed this out to the seller, and he said "Oh, wow I didn't even notice that" yeah right.

I believe there is an expression involving a pig and lipstick that would apply nicely......LOL!!!!

From the pic it looked like a repaint to me. Wrong 'shade' of metalic blue. Too bright and 'purple-ish'. Hard to tell from one crappy digital pic however. I love that saw series, but would only pay him about 1/10th of what he was asking for that one.......and that's if it had a good P/C. I just missed a BEAUTIFUL blue XL12 (seen with better pics) here on CL a few months ago. The seller had it listed for $40, and it came with a sweet looking handbuilt wooden box. Missed a really nice looking blue E-Z for $30 recently too.

Absolutely, but I wanted to check it out to find a negotiating point on behalf of someone further away............after seeing the condition I just told him thanks, and I walked away.

I'll bet I know which 'further away' someone you were checking it out for Jon. I checked out a cool but overpriced NOS SXL-AO for him a while ago (which he wisely passed on). I'm one of his CAD enablers....:D

Ooops! That's right. However, what's up with having a decomp on such a small saw?

Well I done a little digging and here is what I found. By looking at the Partner Formula 500 IPL I found the part # for the P/C assy is 503168301. Guess what? That is also the same part # for a Husqvarna 51 P/C.

Why the decomp, probably because they use the same casting for the 51-55 Huskys! The decomp hole would have to be plugged off to use on the Partner 500 platform saws as it would interfear with the upper handle mount.

But yes it would fit the 490, but then again by that part # so would a 46mm 55 P/C.

I might just try a 55 top on a 500 I have here.

I'm not so sure you post should have been moved from the general chainsaw forum for this posting as its informative.

I forgot about the stickies when I posted. Just don't go there very often except on the Jonsered thread. I agree that now, it maybe should be in the general chainsaw forum because I was mostly curious if I could end up using one of these in the future. I know that the p/c for this saw is hard to find, as is the recoil cover (I am now looking for one). At least, now, the saw can go a little longer (until the recoil hatches).

Wrong. It makes no difference. I have swapped pans dozens of times with no issues.

Yes, pans. No biggie. OP meant case halves, as in crankcase halves, as in pro series Stihls. There are no halves to a tank assy on an 039.
And swapping halves, done correctly, is no biggie either.

Spendy...:monkey:...around here we don't see many chainsaw advertising signs, especially large ones.

Well OK smart guy...................more than many of us can afford to spend on a piece of coolness that's just gonna hang on a wall. They probably got the damn thing for fee, or $10 at a yard sale...:monkey:

--go ferit, why not? If it is cheap enough, fun to get it going then go cut some small stuff.

You can run it by the smart guys on the poulan sticky as well. From my POV, most any of those older poulans seem to be quite nice saws.

Thanks Zogger and DSS. I picked it up. Needs to be cleaned up some. It has a new diaphragm and fuel line. Still a little hard to start and wants to cut out if you suddenly back off the trigger when going full in the cut.

Cool beans. It probably just needs a bit of tinkering. The boys in the poulan thread can tell you anything you need to know about it and then some. I find you have to pull quite a few times to start all of those little poulans, they have a very long fuel line for their size.

Look how far your chainsaw dollar goes when you shop CRAIGSLIST!

Here we have a very gently used Husqvarna 575XP for only $125!!

Looks about right, you did say Husky...

Nice snag. I noticed you waited to post until after your purchase. Can't imagine why.

With my slow-a$$ internet connection it took me about 90 minutes to post this:dizzy: I found the ad at 8:30 this morning and was at the guys doorstep by 10:00. He told me he had received about a dozen calls since our conversation at 8:30. This happens often; you get to choose between posting it here before you buy and and missing the deal or just running out to get it and worrying about posting later. The really good deals last minutes to hours at most. More than once I have driven up to a house and watched 'my' saw walking away with somebody else:msp_mad:
