The 90 is an older saw designed for torque, not designed for speed. While I'd be curious to know if anyone has gone inside a 90 to see what if any mods were possible, I'd tune it properly (not on the "razor's edge") and run it for what it is, a cool vintage saw.

:agree2:

No reason you can't port one of these......raise the Ex port a little....and drop the intake tad to pick up the revs...still have plenty of torque.....transfers are rather small especially where the lowers meet the cases..just alum.....the issue is more... would you want to do that to NLA antique parts.....some say yes some say no....

If they use thrust washer spacers on the wrist pin, like most of the other josereds from that era, porting for too much rpm may not be the way to go.

Im thinking of trading my 630 for a 920. would this be a good swap? assuming both saws are of equal condition. Thanks!

What models are 630 and 920?
Are they Supers or the regular models?

Greg

Greg, these are the regular models. Or i assume. I know my630 was. I made the trade and brought home the 920. Are there tall tell signs to look for with this 920 to determine whether its a "super". The decals are gone. No indication on the ID tag. Would it say "super" ? Thanks,

Shane

I'm sure but I think it has to do with porting. The supers seem to be a hotter saw in the spec. sheets.
As long as you are happy with it that is all that matters.

Greg

There are no differences in performance between a 920 and 920 super, just a decal.

Ok, thanks, I've never ran the 920's. I know the there is a difference between the 630 (3.5 hp) and the 630 super (4.3 hp). The 920's are again some of the saws that Jonsered has kept the offical horsepower figures a secret.

Not sure where those numbers came from, but again there is no difference in performance between a 630 and 630 Super. They went from a 2 ring piston to one ring but the parts are interchangeable and no differences in porting. Not until you get into the Super II were there differences, but I still don't think there was any change in HP.

I got those figures from the Acres website.

Thanks for the info on the 920 fella's. Theres a 920 super on the Bay right now for parts. I looked over the pictures closely and the only difference i could point out between mine and the super was the muffler. My muffler is louvered at the top whereas the super on ebay has a square port exiting out the top corner and no louvers to speak of. Maybe a 'super" muffler or a really clean MM.

Yeah, those numbers are wrong. He has the kw listed instead of hp. Acres' site is a great resource but some of the info is incorrect.

The louvered muffler is the spark arrester muffler. It is common to see them out west because they are needed to cut on federal land.

Ok, because I did convert from kw to hp. My calculator with Windows 8 will do that for you automatically. Just enter the numbers after you pick the convert from, and convert to. Real easy!

I promised spike60 some pics of my 670's.
The first is a taste.
This Champ came from the original owner who only cut one tree with it (a large maple). I ran one tank through it in 2004 when I got it and it has been a shelf queen since.

These are my 670's that see the most use.
The Champ started it's life as a Super that my cousin wedged between his skidder and a tree.
The other is an early Super that came from the same cousin when he caught "562XP fever".

Those are some amazing Jreds you have there  I enjoyed looking at those Beaut's more than you know  Thanks for sharing!

No problem z50. The 670 have always been one of my favorites. When I was young, they were everywhere around here.

Does the z50 in your username refer to the Honda Mini bike? I grew up on a CT70 and CT70H.

Thanks for sharing those 670's. I have an assortment of 625s, 630s, and 670s, 10 in all, and I like all of them. They are my go to saw when any serious work is to be done. The power to weight and the saw's balance I find to be excellent when working in the woods.
