Nice to see you again ... be advised that the springs in the cores used in compression gauges are waay weaker than those used in tire valves .... don't ask how I know ..

Are you saying that you might get a faulty reading with a tire valve stem?? Or that the OEM compression ones will fail faster?? Just wondering.
 
I did .. tried to use tire stem valves and did not get same readings (lower) than when I used OEM valves.

Well, cool. Guess I just gotta punch the Matco guys with an email... maybe they'll send me a baggie of new cores for the compression gauge. :cheers:

Hopefully I am done with school (I think I am, but am going in tomorrow to ask the instructors to make sure) so that I can get that cylinder bored...

Then I just need to buy a couple of boxes of baking soda to use with my redneck hillbilly soda blaster that is a blow gun with a piece of vinyl tube on it...

That way I can soda blast the tins and such, which is a much more gentle method of blasting than sand or glass blasting.

Then I'll bring a couple of paint chips to the guy down the road and see how much it'd be for him to mix up some paint for me.

And finally, I will mask off what I need to and hit it all with a few coats of paint... I'm thinking I'll try my old school Binks Wren airbrush for more control and less overspray.

I could try using my big old DeVilbiss paint gun, but I'm afraid that the overspray would coat everything inside my barn...

So any new yeller saws for you, Wingnut?

Yah .... fixed up a 10-10A for my buddy's grandson .... got another 10-10A done with my kid ..... picked up a 440 a few weeks ago in good shape ... and the last yeller one (with a hint of green) was a Deere 66SV .....

Re Introduction

Gentlemen, After a big mess and much help (a week or so ago) with my posts, including pictures, I'd like to start from the beginning.

This was my first Bow Saw. From the mid to late 1950s we tinkered with cars and mororcycles in the garage which we heated with a potbelly stove. We didn't own a chainsaw. We cut all our wood with this bow and the two-man you see in my Avatar.

This was my first chainsaw. A Sears/Roper I purchased new for $149.00 from Sears. It is still the saw I grab when I'm cutting fire wood. After all these years it is still a powerhouse at 3.7 cu. inches.

My next saw was this Eager Beaver 3.7" with a 20" bar. The reason it looks new is because I never wanted to wear it out. It only has 10 to 15 hrs. of run time on it after all these years. It's a great saw and will still be like new when my kids get it.

You'll possibly start a riot here on the boards posting pics of the Eager Beavers or 610s, not sure why.....
 
Here's a great tip I like to share..Picked up a nice SP81 yesterday got it on the bench the fella was right no spark. Put in a good 10-10A coil and no spark and kill wire was new looking..Okay here we go with the bad condensor replacemant app and sure enough pulled flywheel and was in bad condition and needs to be replaced with a cap chip, points are clean and fine.

Fix...There are two legs that are on the 630v cap chip and both solder friendly that replaces the bad condensor, one pigtail wire is soldered and goes to the points nut. The other pigtail is soldered and goes to the screw that held the bad condensor in place. Lifetime on these cap chips I'm using first Mac I done I never see any coils go bad:rock:
 
JoshF - post some part numbers, I have quite an assortment of parts for the older saws, but no spare diaphragms.

If anyone out there knows where to find some NOS diaphragms for the 3-25, 4-30, 47, 73, and 77 saws I'd like to know...

It's alright... I know how you feel... :frown: I am quite confused as well... sounds like I'm going to that boat place. Word has it that they sell Mac parts. If there is something you're having a hard time finding, put the part number(s) in your post and I'll see if they have the part(s)...



While ya'll were posting and pissing around AS on your MC101 powered mini bikes, my old 610 (not 6-10) got to eat breakfast this morning...

So... here are some pics of the small mess I made on that pile of logs we got from Lenny...

This old ******* started barked on the 7th pull with choke after sitting unused for well over four months... started right up on the pull after that without choke. One more reason to have one good running 610 in your barn or garage... it will not let you down, but it might slobber bar oil all over the table you set it on...

Sounds kinda like me, don't it?


As of other Mac news, the 850 is being mean to me as of late... it just refuses to start despite trying different settings on the screws and such... it barked on the third pull with choke, and absolutely refused to do so again, by repeatedly flooding the cylinder, regardless of the choke being pushed all the way back in... so did lots of that routine de-foul the plug and dump the few ounces of gas out of the cylinder and it still will not start... this is now the third time it has done this to me, making me spend about an hour trying to get it to go again. Yes, it has oodles and oodles of compression, and it's getting gas... If it fired right away when I first pulled it off of its resting place on the bench, then could it be that the plug is so fouled out that it needs to be completely cleaned or replaced?

So, you both should be interested in one I have here that doesn't start so well, but oils like mad. Even when not running.

Its been said that if the oiler doesn't give you a problem on one of these, the oil tank will by leaking bar oil... and vice versa...

I still think these cinder blocks are about the best for the "Oh ####, my 30 other saws won't start, gotta fire up the back up saw!" situations... however unlikely that may be.

My barn houses about seven or eight saws, give or take a couple. Only two run. Well, really only one runs. That's the 610.

Gotta get that 790 going... I need it to justify a roller nose bar purchase, or several of them... :blob2::blob2::blob2:

The Super 44A will be the next one to get work done on it... it needs a crank and much more, like a Tilly HL swap or if it can be cleaned up and restored, I'll put the seized up McRoundback carby back in...

That oil/diesel trick might do it... if not, try pulling the pump off of the oil tank and cleaning it up... could be a bunch of crap plugging it up in a way that none of it can get out.
